  1. I am hoping to have an algae eating crew so Im not too worried about that. I was planning to put Black Mollies, ottos, Maybe a bristlenose pleco depending on space and how much of everything else I get, a couple of sweet snails and red cherry shrimps and Ive read that all of them help with algae. Please correct me if I was wrong. Thanks again Hey thanks for your reply. I think Ill be able to get one bag of fluorite and mix it in with the sand to help with plant growth and color. Thanks Hmm I didnt think of that but the substrate I have right now is gravel and Its not deep enough for my liking so I was going to change it. Thanks though =]
  2. Thanks CatShanon, sorry I probably do sound rushed but I want to mainly get the bulbs and substrate and the equipments I would need. I wasnt planning to add all the plants at once, and I tried Cabomba last time too, and it grew really well and fast but I think because the light was really bad the bottom part of the plant was dying so I had floating leaves everywhere. I might look into diy co2 but is there any specific problem with using dirt? I was going to go looking for a timer for sure when I go to Canadian tire or home depot as almost everyone recommends it. Thanks again for your help thanks again bettafishmommy but yeah pressurized cylinders are out of the questions though there are a lot of Do it yourself co2 systems on the net and Ive seen a couple that I think I can do.
  3. I think the max I can keep the lights on is 8 hours a day because my parents this it will make the electric bill fly to the sky even though I did my best to calculate it and showed them that it would only cost a cpl of bucks maximum. I also read that if you use a planted tank you can go above the gallon per inch rule, is that true? Ill keep looking for lighter bulbs and hopefully find some that gives me 1.8-2 watts per gallon.
  4. Hey thanks for the quick reply! I have a bag of topsoil in my backyard that hasnt been opened yet so I was thinking I could use that. I have read its better than sand for plants anyways? And I do realize that its a high amount of light but some of my plants will need it, and is it okay if I only keep the light on for 6 hours every day? Some of the plants I am considering are Anubias, Java Fern, Amazon Sword Plant, Some kind of moss, maybe Christmas? Pygmy Swordplant, H. Polysperma, Wisteria, and Cabomba? Is that list okay? Thanks again
  5. I once again apologize for always filling this website with stupid questions but Ive always wanted a planted fish tank and if I fail this time I guess Im gonna give up on it for a long time. The tank Im going to change is my 20 gallon, Ive sold all the fish that were originally in it, now it only has 3 red cherry shrimps left. My main question right now is about Lighting and Substrate as I want to start this tank sometime this weekend because its a long weekend and school is too much during weekdays. For Lighting I was thinking of 2 GE's 26W 6500k cool Daylight bulbs (They are supposed to be equivalent to 100W) and I think that would be more than sufficient as it would mean I get 2.6 Watts per Gallon. For Substrate Im stuck, I have been looking up online and read that a lot of people use just 2 inches of normal topsoil covered with 1.5inch of gravel and Im sort of attracted to that idea because I dont have the money to spend 15-25 dollars per bag of substrate. Does anyone know if that will work or any place to get cheap substrate? Since I really want to get this started asap those are my first issues, I do have a list of plants and fish I want that I will probably add soon. Thanks for all your help!!!
  6. Thanks for heads up lol, will record it for sure.
  7. :welcome: pictures of the 90 gallon?
  8. lol true I just found it sweet that someone actually tried it and suceeded.
  9. At first I saw his 3 gallon tank video and was really impressed but then I saw this and holy crap. watch and be amazed!
  10. sweet picture, know any local store that sells badis badis? I only saw them at pisces once and that almost a year ago. A school of a hundred neons is what some dream about lol

    Hello

    :welcome: to Alberta Aquatica
  12. FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS I found 2 fry in the 5 gallon so hopefully they are endlers but they could be guppies as well not sure yet
  13. No I didnt notice any drastic drop in temperature, that was my first guess when I saw the 5 gallon as its always the coldest.
  14. I know I searched it up and couldnt find anything on it either, but I found a dead platy today in my 20 gallon but apart from that everything seems fine. I fed them before going to sleep so I know they were alive unless there were a couple I didnt notice missing and then in the morning they were all dead, I guess I should have taken a picture in case that would have helped but I had to bury the fish because my mom thought dozens of dead fish might screw up the plumbing somehow.
  15. No there were no insecticide or new ornaments, the only changes that had been made in the last week was removing a couple of the violent endlers and putting them together. Thanks for your help though. Ive had a lot of mysterious death but this was the weirdest and its the most frustrating one too lol.
  16. Okay so heres a little background, I had 10 endlers that I got from a fellow AA member and another 7 or 8 tht I bought off a friend in a 20 gallon along with a handful of platies and another batch of endlers in my 5gallon, I also had 4 endlers in a 10 gallon with 2 baby multies for a couple of days as they seemed to be getting violent towards my other endlers and I woke up to find them all dead, in all the tanks, no major water changes or any thing that could have stressed them lately and they seemed to be doing good, a couple of females were looking pleasantly plump were prolly gonna release some babies soon, well I know this topic is posted in fish emergencies but its not really an emergency any more, I just need to know what happened, I dont get how they all died in the first place and then the million dollar question how did it happen in all my tanks? Damn this hurt me exactly where it hurts, the wallet >.< I understand how messed up this post sounds but any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  17. Not sure I understand the question exactly but heres what I have in my tank. 2 tetras(used to setup the tank) corydoras sterbai australherlos red ceibal F1 and F2 fry BANJO CATFISH FOUR LINE PICTUS one squeaker albino bristlenoses Oh and as for the windows. the newer types are made to reflect IF and other types of heat but allow our visible light through. The same is not true for aquarium glass. I also found a window overlooking the fence that seems to have really old glass in my basement. However I can't find motion senser software for my tuner card. hauppauge pvr-150. I have tried lots of software but none seems able to pickup the video channel, and sometimes other channels for demo purposes. And the one 'coffeecup' that does can't seem to detect motion on some settings and it must e-mail the pictures to me, I can't just have it save the date and time. I swear I think I see fry eyes or something like a whole swarm of them. Sorry I dont know how I managed to put all those words together, they didnt make any sense.
  18. hey nice video, are those fry from 46seconds to a min 11? Couldn't tell for sure.
  19. Im gonna check it out too though Im still wishing it was as its old location, it was a 5 min walk for me lol
  20. Ive used both aquarium and table salt and they both had high hatch rates for me
  21. any kinda loach will eat all your snails, the best one for you would probably will a yoyo loach cuz they stay small I think. When I had a snail problem I just borrowed my friends yoyo loach for a lil while and he went back to him a week later full.
  22. hey I know almost nothing about plants but when I first added my sword plant to the tank it also turned yellow, but that went away by itself, and I later on found out from people that some leaves go bad or melt when added to a new tank. That might be the case since you only added them 2 weeks ago. Trimming the leaves will fix that. It could also be that it needs more iron or nitrogen. Hope that helps though there are other people on this forum that can help you a lot more.
  23. Yes - though some people, I have noticed, are a little fussy about names lol that and I actually name my cats and loaches - my pakistani's name is YoYo (original, I know) lol thanks for that, just got a lil confused as I myself am from Pakistan but didnt know there was a loach named after it.
