  1. I wonder if one of you savy photographers would tell me what a good setting would be to photograph my tank through glass. Or perhaps some close ups of fish. I played around with it in manual but was completely lost!
  2. I recently read some scientific study that seemed to find mollies doing some cross species breeding. Might be a good reason for their adaptability to many water conditions. I've found mollies to thrive in almost everything. Great beginner fish imho
  3. *crosses fingers* lets see more SAM and asian fish =)
  4. I've seen bulk rolls at Aquagiant just in case you're the skeptical one.
  5. Very interesting. I'm not usually one for the fake, but I really like it. Who's dog did you dig up?

    DIY hood

I was thinking about getting the ones with the debris screen to fit led lights in the holes. I'm currently in the middle of a 5mm led plant growth/lighting experiment.

Just though this was too awesome not to share it! http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/diy-aquarium-projects/68034-my-diy-hood.html
  8. Unless I missed it. What chemicals do you add to your water? There is a brand of ph down that technically could cause that problem. But I find it unlikely.
  9. I used to pump my aquarium water into several layers of house plants and then back to the tank. As a result my aquarium water was pure and didn't require changing.
  10. My fatherinlaw takes bucketfulls down to the fish stores to try and give them away. They don't take them. I really don't want to get into detail about what he ends up doing with the fish... some might not consider it humane-friendly. Oh and they'll live, and live, and live, and before you know it you'll have 18,000 of them. Feed those puffers well!
  11. Convicts, you'll have plenty. They breed so easy many use them for feeders. I'd suggest just leaving it alone.
  12. I had no idea there was any kind of a coating on it. I just dumped sand into my tank every time.
  13. You don't necessarily have to buy the super expensive eheim filter pads and whatnot. You can buy bulk and cut to fit at a super fraction of the price!
  14. The new forum could just be highlighting a problem in your web browser. Maybe check for an upgrade?
  15. wow, didn't know they built a petsmart there. Thanks for the heads up!
  16. I found the original thread http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumap...-tank-film.html turns out they're blackworms and I'd love to have them in my tank!

    low oxygen

Still any ideas to up aeration like crazy could help. I think I need to get a much more powerful air pump.

    low oxygen

This is what Diana Walstad sent me. An organic soil can consume considerable oxygen, especially first few months. For your tank, I would turn up the filter flow rate to make sure that your fish get enough oxygen. Eventually, decomposition will slow down as the fresh soil organic matter gets chewed up. Then you might want to turn flow rate down to conserve CO2 for your plants. Its tricky finding the correct balance. Let fish behavior be your guide. If fish are gasping at the surface in early morning, then increase water flow/aeration. If fish are fine and plants growing poorly, then try decreasing the water flow/aeration.

I was told they were a good sign.

    low oxygen

It's a natural planted tank with black soil substrate. Unfortunately the substrate wasn't done decomposing when the store decided to sell it. There is no smell from what bubbles up so I don't think it's s02. I havn't considered NO at this point.

    low oxygen

Rather heavily planted. enough to provide hiding spots in the plants. No co2 addition though. It's a little more pricey than I can go right now. I should also mention that my substrate bubbles with co2 which was the effect I was looking for, but to suck up all the o2 is overkill.

    low oxygen

I found a chatroom and with the advice of a guy in there I took an air tube, hooked it to a cheap powerhead from walmart and made a venturi powerhead. hopefully it helps =)
  23. Ok, so I bought a red sea o2 test kit to verify a hypothesis I had. Tons of beneficial bacteria can be a bad thing. No foul odors from my aquarium. Everything perfect. Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate test 0 in a planted tank. In my tank I currently have a surfact skimmer, an air bubbler about 30" long, and a modified eheim 2017 to make a small waterfall on the way back into the tank. My readings are 3 drops and blue, so 3ppm oxygen if I am reading it right. My temp is about 77 F which means I should have 8.3 ppm oxygen. I've also noticed some panting on the fish. I usually do a water change and they're fine for a few days. apart from trying to get rid of the beneficial bacteria living in my substrate which unfortunately needs some biological processes how should I go about adding more oxygen? It's a 90 gallon planted tank with breeding and some young fish.
  24. Just thinking out of the box but if you stirred everything up you could have a lot of extra (beneficial) bacteria right now eating up all the o2 that would normaly just live where they are in the substrate.
