  1. Also keep in mind, the fluvals do not come with bulbs. My single took a 22" bulb and that was around 22 dollars. I bought it as I was told I could use sunblaster bulbs... wrong... Oh well, I'm still very pleased with the results..
  2. I got a single Fluval T5 for a 20 gallon and thought I'd made a mistake in purchasing it.... but I'm really pleased!! I was replacing a double coralife fixture too. I have some rarer swordplants in there and they have beautiful colour and are sending out runners. IMHO... going from a cheap fluorescent to a quad T5 is like going from a Honda civic to a Lamborghini. Granted you may have some amazing results but the upkeep will be more money, equipment and most likely algae. You can drive a Honda civic for years, have little upkeep and still get around.. Again, IMHO.. you'll be more than happy with a double fixture. Growing plants is a learning process and is easier if you start off simple. I love my planted tanks and want others to enjoy theirs too rather than get discouraged..
  3. if you ever want to clear up a cloudy tank, it's awesome!! And it's hornwort as crystalwort is riccia..
  4. Yu might want to check out black Friday specials. Big Al's has buy one get a plant for a dollar and I think Riverfront's anniversary sale is still on, 50 percent off.
  5. Latest order is here... 20 fancy and dragoh pks pairs and they're mine... all mine....mine.. mine....
  6. Well... we can see the potholes in our roads as we have a chinook.... Go Stamps Go!!
  7. Brought back some pothole livebearers and I just spotted 2 fry in there.. What little cuties!! Always nice to get a rare brown fish going...
  8. Bruno, You're on the right track with adding some fast growing stem plants. Hygrophilia polysperma/ludwigia repens are good ones and don't need CO2. From your pic, it looks like your tank gets some natural light, if I'm correct? You could definitely shorten your light period then. Also you can add some BN plecos to clean up the algae too. Every planted tank takes some time to settle down..
  9. 've done it many times and I just use breather bags in a small cooler in my luggage. I have heard of a CAS member who brought fish in her carryon and had dechlorinator with her for after she cleared security.. Myself, I did forget about some fish in my bags and security found them. The security guard and I were trying to drain the bag so they were "legal" but then the head security let me through. He must've realised the fish were not a threat to national security....
  10. Merry widows, golden teddies and potholes(yes, these are fish...) And I crashed the Greater Chicago cichlid meeting where cichlids were selling for what they are worth.... a dollar... Just kidding.. I do keep some plant friendly cichlids like apistos, kribs and angels..
  11. Ray, that is correct and this was at the airport. Brought back some rare wild type livebearers that no one likes but me...
  12. Decided to test Canada Customs and declare my fish. I had got the seller to make a bill of sale with their scientifice names, price etc. First question was from customs " Did I have Ebola or have I been in contact with someone with Ebola?".. Then he asks what livestock I have and I mention tropical fish. We both agree that they wouldn't stand a chance in this weather and off I go!!
  13. Crinum natans can either be farmed or taken from the wild. In the wild, they are threatened but interesting not so much by the aquarium trade but for food and lotions. Sounds like you've ordered wild plants and Pisces is carrying farmed plants, hence the difference in price. They are a plant that does like some current as they grow in rivers in the wild. Thanks to Karen Randall of the Aquatic Gardener's Association for this info.
  14. They're killifish. The eggs have a dormant phase to mimic their dry season.
  15. I would suggest getting in touch with Jewels who lives in the 'hat too. Great guy and can definitely help you out with plants!!
  16. Me thinks you may have got scarlet temple, which is a difficult plant. General rule of thumb, go with dark green plants as a beginner..
  17. Nkotb... no fish likes that. You should try some real old school like Frank Sinatra and mix it up with some Elvis Costello, Jack White... Fish don't like predictable..
  18. Eating too much d--kweed??? They eat kale too...
  19. Elezra, First off, have you ever had a fish tank? It's a learning process and we all get better(I hope) as we decide what works for us and our fish and plants. You mention substrate but no mention of lights, CO2, what kind of plants you wish to grow, fish, etc. From your budget for substrate, this could be a very expensive tank!! Ada has done much to promote the hobby but their tanks should come with a warning sticker "not for beginners"... I hate seeing people spend a lot of money on an aquascape just to drop the hobby a couple of months later when it doesn't work. I love my many planted tanks but it took me many years to get to this and I am continually changing to grow my plants better. Everyone starts off on a tricycle.. not a racing bike.. So start simple(please) and grow from there..
  20. Your fish have lousy taste in music. I find a steady diet of alt rock does the trick.. On the road is different and many a fish had been amused by my attempts to rap....just saying.. alt rock does the trick!!
  21. So I'm putting one of plants away from my Edmonton trip and move around a rock tunnel that usually the kribs own... but there's a bn in there. I have pulled BN fry from this tank before so I have my suspicions.... and yes, he's got a good load of eggs.. So I figure out a tank that he can move into with his tunnel and go to fetch him.. but he's enticed another lady friend into his tunnel of love... Don Juan de pleco....
