  1. Thought I would mention that you can get a relatively decent pair of timers from Ikea for about 8 bucks I think it is. They are simple 2 prong without the ground and use a dial that you click the times you want activated... no pegs to push in or lose. You can find them by the lighting section in the Marketplace on the main floor.
  2. turn up the heat.... 30-32ish seemed to work for me when my last episode of ick happened... just make sure there are bubbles since oxygen is depleted with the rise in heat. Someone else can tell you how to use the meds since I havent had success using Nox ich.
  3. wow... really nice looking little guys.... makes me question my choice of shrimps now....
  4. Hmmm - I will figure something out. I think I would be afraid you will make yourself a set of betta skin shoes or something...
  5. My first attempt at breeding bettas was basically throwing a male and female into a tank for fun and it happened. I am now on my second betta breeding and just recently had my Bolivian rams spawn. Livebearers are of course easy and kind of boring since it doesnt involve much interaction on my part. It is very neat to see the development of fish from tiny little egg to wriggler and on. I do think I am hooked and expect to be doing more as I have a bunch more betta arriving this weekend. I'm still not sure where I am going to house them....
  6. Not sure this will help you but I would go into your options > Forum Tab > View\posting\email prefs you will see a Topic display mode dropdown. Mine is currently set to standard and I am currently using the silver wonder skin.
  7. Just tried it on my bb and don't seem to be having problems with the display. It works just like when on my computer. This reply is also done via bb. Cale what model bb are you using? I have the bb tour through Telus.
  8. I got mine at big als but didnt really shop around to find a good price. Biggest problems are the tubing I have isnt very flexible and also air bubble getting trapped inside the grav vac which causes a suction lock. I dont vac as much as most people since my tanks are planted. I have mine plugged into a power bar which I can turn on and off with my foot as needed.
  9. yup... still use the bucket if doing a gravel vac on occasion. Although I have tried utilizing the pump for this function as well which involves attaching it to the gravel vac tube on one end and a bottle with holes cut into the bottom filled with filter floss. The water goes back into the tank but the garbage gets caught. Still working on ironing out some of the problems but it does works fairly decent.
  10. I tired of using a bucket to do water changes about 3 hours into this hobby and didnt like the water waste using a python so I went out and got one of these pumps. Mine is attached to a garden hose that I run across my basement about 40 feet to where my utility sink is. Works great to remove the water quickly. When I am ready to put water in the tanks I attach that end to the tap and remove the pump from the other end and start filling. Works great and no water wasted using a python (not that I have ever used one).
  11. I had the same thing happen when I first cycled my new tank. Was told it was diatoms and also had hydra which look like little tree like critters when inspected closely. Its normal and will go away eventually. I think my swords even ate some of it.
  12. I love the Nerites... I finally managed to track some down a few weeks ago and they cleaned up my big chunk of driftwood which was covered in algae. Where did ya get the horned ones?
  13. I am not really a snail breeder but I dont think it really requires much effort on your part to get them going. I had a stowaway red ramshorn snail come in on a plant that I had put into my quarantine tank (15 gallon) after I bought it. I had inspected the plant prior to the QT and didnt notice passengers or any sort of eggs on it. 3 days after QT I saw the single tiny snail (maybe about 2 mm) moving about and it grew and grew till it was about 1cm in diameter. It was the only snail for a period of at least a month at which time I noticed that I had many many many more tiny snails appearing. The QT tank has been up and running for various QT reasons and had light algae growth which I think allowed the snail to feed and grow so quickly. I now have 30 or so snails all coming from that single snail. I also tried him in a small 2.5 gallon (no heater, light or filter) and while I did have some snails hatch... they didnt grow out as well as my QT tank probably cuz there wasnt as much food available to eat from lack of lighting. I would guess that the 5G that you are thinking of will be more than enough to get things going.
  14. Neat! I didnt know that would happen... I might have to try that tonight!
  15. hmm... well I didnt know about it possibly being toxic to shrimp... I cut 3 of mine inside my 31G tank at the same time and my shrimp are still kicking. (2 amano and 2 red crystals)
  16. just thought I would post this cuz I thought it was really neat! Feather Star
  17. I have never done anything with the flowers so I dont know if they will eventually grow if it seeds... I dont know anything about growing it from seeds but I would imagine it would need to be germinated somehow like emersed plants do before it will actually grow... someone else might know. I just leave my flowering anubias alone and it eventually gets covered in algae and then I cut it off.
  18. You can just cut the anubias rhizome to propogate. I had 3 leaves per section and they survived quite well.
  19. Hi all, So I took the plunge and got a decent deal on a used compressed CO2 system for my tanks. First order of business for me is to get this 20lb monster filled. Being a big deal hunter, I was wondering if the other plantys in here could share where they get or have gotten their tanks filled before and what their experiences was like. Maybe this could be a price and service comparison for future reference to others who might be looking for a place to take their tanks? Here is a suggested format for what I am looking for (use it if ya want to): Tank size, cost, business name, test cost if applicable, wait time or tank swap if applicable short description of your experience with them and any extra services that they provide(ie Do they sell new or used tanks? Do they do testing? Do they do a tank swap for the fill?) and any other input you feel is appropriate to mention. Thanks for any help and information you can provide!
  20. FCG... you still have any assassins for sale? I need to off someone... err... I mean off some snails... :ph43r:
  21. welcome to the forums :P The Fluval Edge is actually 6 gallons so its a decent size for your betta. You will need to read up about the nitrogen cycle so that you understand how the aquarium system works. Setting up your tank should be pretty easy and your friend should be able to cycle it fairly quickly with media from their tank. Wash out the gravel that you buy and put it into the tank and maybe get a couple small pieces of driftwood in the tank or some small stones. If your friend has plants I would recommend getting some from them as it will definitely be nice to have in your tank but the lighting in that Fluval might be an issue. Once you are setup and cycled you will probably need to get a gravel vacuum in order to clean the substrate out once in a while and will need to change 30-40% of the water out once a week or two depending on how many fish you have in there. I would suggest a few pygmy cories, a couple of otocinclus and maybe 3-4 of something small like Endlers or some other type of really small fishy. This stocking might be over the limit of what that little tank can handle though. No clue about soft water... hopefully someone else here can help you with that! Anyone else know something about soft water? I am curious about this as well! Good luck!
  22. checked on sunday because I was in the area and it appears all the terrors are gone... was 4 jack dempseys left.
  23. Followin Wingit's line of thought, the 2 times I have tried breeding bettas I have had the female separated in the tank using one of those tank dividers for a number of days to get the male warmed up to the idea. You can usually tell if he is flaring at her through the screen. I then make a bit of an opening to allow the female to roam into his side if she wants to and vice versa. Might take a bit before he realizes that making a nest might be a good idea. There might be a long period before he managed to entice her back to his nest between chasing her around so patience comes in handy. My 2nd attempt went much quicker with the fish getting together after a day. Size of the female in comparison to the male also plays a factor. If she is too big then he would probably pass on making the attempt. Then again I am no expert on the subject. My 2 attempts at breeding have been just for interests sake (and I wanted to replace some fish a friend lost at work) :P .
  24. Maybe Maddie heard ya comin and spit the fishy out...
  25. I am on Telus with a BB Tour and its been working fine for me as well. When I first went to the site it asked me to change my theme.
