  1. While the Malawi haplochromines and the calvus have similar dietary requirements, you may find that the Malawi will outcompete the calvus for food come feeding time. The calvus grow slow enough as it is. I would also personally stick to only one species of peacocks as they are at high risk to hybridize and males don't really get along with each other too well. The synodontis will do great with all of these fish. The larger haplochromines will certainly appreciate a larger tank.
  2. It is quite possible you just had another spike of ammonia with the increased bioload. You've almost doubled the number of fish you have in a fairly short period of time. Just continue with water changes and don't hesitate to vacuum your gravel.
  3. Or you could add some charcoal to your AC filtre. That'll clear it up right quick.
  4. I once kept my yo-yo's in a 20 gallon tank for about 8 months. That was about 7 years ago. I still have them. They are monsters now at 4-5 inches and are in a 90 gallon tank.
  5. Definitely a melanochromis. Is it Melanochromis vermivorus?
  6. Do you feed your carnivorous plecos anything in addition to the NLS wafers?
  7. Sorry to hear about your loss. I've had my yo-yo's for over 5 years now and they are truly endearing fish.
  8. Those are some beautiful fish you have there. Are you still bored?
  9. I just bought a couple of bags today at Home Depot. $5.97 for a 25 kg bag.

    Fish feeders

Don't feed them. They'll be OK without being fed for one weekend. It's a safer option than having an automated feeder dump way too much food in your tank.
  11. Looking good Quincy. The water has cleared up nicely! Nice work with the camera.
  12. I have a couple of severums in the tank with them and a bristlenose pleco. I figured the Synodontis multipunctatus were sure to poach any eggs that were being laid, so they had to go.
  13. Hey Darcy, Do you still have your nics? I have a couple in my 90 gallon tank presently and haven't seen any eggs yet. I just removed some S. multipunctatus that were sharing the tank with them. They do alot of digging, but no eggs. I am going to add some clay pots for caves and if I don't see any action in the next little while I might be interested in a swap. It is very possible that I have 2 males here. Both are the same size at ~7" and have rather broad heads but not really a nuchal hump. Rather orangy in color with pale blue operculum. No brilliant red like I see in pics of females or sleeker head shape. I have read that it is difficult to get a compatible pair as well though. Let me know if you're still interested in an exchange. David.
  14. Welcome Home. Happy to hear that you're back in one piece.

The fourth compartment is on the bottom? That sounds fine. You might as well put something in the top (first) compartment the next time you service your filtre. The ceramic noodles are great, but you could really use anything that is safe to put in your aquarium. Ideally something that has a high surface area for bacterial colonization. I put a bunch of hollow plastic oxygen tubing pieces. I've heard of all sorts of options. One guy even used little plastic army soldiers. Be sure and take out the carbon as it's chemical filtration is of limited duration. You could either replace it with new carbon or put more media for bacterial colonisation in that compartment.
  16. You might be OK with a single leleupi? I think the problems arise when you try to keep more than one, particularily 2 males. Perhaps someone with experience with these could comment?

I have never replaced my filtre media either. I rinse it out in tank water every couple of months. I never used my carbon.
  18. Sand is certainly the substrate to go with. A lot of people recommend going with darker sand for black calvus and lighter sand for white calvus. They also appreciate and make use of shells. They will often duck into these to take cover ie. during water changes. I can't really comment on leleupi, other than to say many people keep them with calvus. From what I've read they will need a rather large tank to limit conspecific aggression amongst the leleupi.
  19. Happy to share it.
  20. I love my severums. I bought a large gold one last year, it is a personal favourite of mine now. I liked their temperament so much I went out and bought 4 more green ones. I found this great article on severums in the Calgary Aquarium Society's library taken from the Calquarium: (another of many great articles posted there by Grant Gussie) http://www.calgaryaquariumsociety.com/Arti...eap_Discus.html
