  1. Yes, I was reading somewhere that they like strong currents. Actually, I just checked this out in Ad Konings book, "Enjoying Cichlids" and they are not rheophilic(cichlids living in fast flowing waters) but they were grouped with these cichlids. It is recommended to have a powerhead in the tank for these fish. I figure it makes sense given that they are such fast swimmers. Ron, I may take you up on that Powerhead 802 if Kris doesn't want it. David.
  2. Hey Kris, Nice looking pics. I just picked up 4 of these guys myself almost a month ago from Riverfront. I'm keeping them in my 90 gallon tank. No real color yet. They are rather docile but they are fast. Do you have a powerhead in your tank for them? Drop me a PM when you decide to get rid of yours. David.
  3. Sweeet looking fish. Is that a door stopper in your tank?
  4. I'm not familiar with that variety. Nice score nonetheless. Probably my favorite fish. Check this link to help you with ID. http://www.ciklidi.org/modules/xoopsgaller...bum28&id=white2 I have 4 Cameron Bay calvus that I bought at a CAS auction about a year ago. David.
  5. It's the second Saturday of every month. So yes, this weekend.
  6. That's a beautiful pleco. What's the L # on that one? Thanks, David.
  7. Use new clay pots to ensure no residual pesticides or fertilizers on them.
  8. My apologies, it is probably an honest and fair question.
  9. Sounds to me like you're posting your tank for sale without a price and taking offers.
  10. A buddy of mine has a colony of daffodils in his 40 gallon tank with haps and mbuna. The daffodils continue to breed and have an end of the tank to themselves.
  11. Hey Kris, I use the same stuff in my AC filters. I rinse it in discarded tank water and place between the two foams of my AC. It traps a lot of crap in it. I discard with each water change. HTH. David.
  12. Dude, sorry to hear about your loss.
  13. Great looking fish. Very informative article on L. caeruleus by Ad Konings. Thanks Neil.
  14. They are definitely Protomelas and look to me to be taeniolatus.
  15. What type of Julies do you have?
  16. It's unikely to be conspecific aggression. I am growing out 4 calvus in a 10 gallon tank myself and have seen little in the way of conspecific aggression other than the occasional chase. I even added a N. pulcher and a J. transcriptus pemba. These two are rapidly outgrowing their calvus tankmates and will likely have to move back to larger quarters. Calvus can be kept in pairs, trios or even small groups if space permits. The males can be hard on the females when they are at a size to breed. My calvus are about 1 1/2" now and still getting along fine. I suspect it may have been the stress of their other tankmates. Malawi are entirely different in temperament from Tangs. Malawi tend to be way more active, almost frantic in their character. I keep shells in my tank that the calvus use regularily to hide in during water changes etc. This may help them cope with the activity going on in the tank. What type of calvus do you have? HTH, David.
  17. They'll be fine for 3-4 months in a 55 gallon tank at that size. The frontosa will be OK there too. You will find that they will have more difficulty competing for food with the quicker Malawi's however. HTH. David.
  18. Pool filter sand all the way. Neutral in colour. Easy to clean and not easily agitated up into filter motors etc.
  19. I would try eartheaters myself. Maybe G. surinamensis. Good luck.
  20. Big Daddy is John Vandenberg from the Calgary Aquarium Society. He is the Jar Show coordinator. You can e-mail him at jvandeb@telusplanet.net. HTH, David.
  21. Did you rinse your new filter and all of its media before introducing it to the tank? Was anyone feeding your fish while you were away? Non fish keepers have no idea how much to feed a tank full of fish.
