  1. I have three purple apples, everyone comments on them. I have some really nice fish but the snails seem to be the talk of the tank!
  2. Like the breeding box! How much are they from Ken's? I found them on ebay for $15 including shipping. I have been thinking about buying one for a while.
  3. I love your snails! Cory's are nice in my books but antennas will grab my attention anytime!
  4. I am bringing an assortment of easy to grow plants. Probably two electric blue peacock, If I can catch them in the 230 gallon. May thin out the ever growing cherry shrimp herd. I am sure I can come up with a few more fish, catching them is the hardest thing. How about you Wingin it?
  5. Petland carried them too. Great diffusers.
  6. I have no inverts with my bettas but the above article says it does not affect them. I know that many Asian countries have a high concentration of parasites in their water so it makes sense that it would affect the fish.
  7. Looks like I may try Avitrol Plus. It contains levamisole and Praziquantel (effective against tapeworm). I have seen it at UFA and have used it in the past when I raised chickens. I may do a test case to make sure it is safe. Here is an interesting article I found while scanning loaches.com: http://www.loaches.com/disease-treatment/levamisole-hydrochloride-1/?searchterm=%20levamisole In particular one statement caught my attention "Internal parasites that can be treated effectively by levamisole are endemic. They are everywhere. Fish are also susceptible to these parasites."
  8. Any more feedback? Very interested to know general opinions.
  9. I have used red wigglers as composters. The most important thing is setting up the container. Using the correct sub-straight is important. Peat moss, sand and good ole garden dirt is required for them to have grit for their gut. I have been considering setting up another colony, they are really good at eating the salad scraps. Once your colony is growing strong, you will have plenty of fish food!
  10. took a look on planet catfish and really did not find anything on preventative worming. Seems Jungle Parasite Clear comes up quite a bit to rid internal parasites.
  11. I was just being pro active. Dan lost quite a few of his discus and would not want to chance loosing any of my betta. especially if it can be prevented. I know that Asia is well known for parasites. I watch "Monsters inside of me" lol. If there are parasites present, he mentioned that there is really no clue until the "fishopsie" and the gut is quite full of tapeworms etc. I was mostly bringing the topic up as personal interest and to get some of our experts feedback.
  12. No, I have only really had the betta for 4 months. They do seem to suffer from quite a few stress induced maladies that can't really be explained. I only wish I was as stress free as my fish!
  13. At the last CAS meeting Dan Gross gave an interesting talk on Discus. He talked about fish health and making sure you purchase healthy stock. He purchased some Asian Discus and they were full of worms. This lead to an early demise. This got me thinking that perhaps many species of the Asian imports have worms. I have quite a few Betta and am concerned about them. Apparently the fish do great for a while and then start a slow decline as the worms take over. How can I go about getting rid of intestinal worms?
  14. I have had problems with ich. Salt and temp cured it. You have to slowly raise the temp to 82 - 86 degrees, until the life cycle is complete, which is 12 to 16 days. I had an unexpected outcome, all my fish started to spawn after the higher temps! This treatment only works for fish. If you, personally have ich, see a doctor lol.
  15. I have apple snails and spixis together with no problem. My only concern is for the baby apple snails. My apple snails have not reproduced in a while so I am not sure if the spixi will eat the young. I know they do enjoy snacking on ram snails.
  16. I am so sorry. It is hard to loose a finned friend.
  17. What about some floating plants? My frogbit has quite a root system and would not be uprooted by the shellies.
  18. Welcome! Fish require a lot of patience. The most important thing I have learned is if you push too fast, bad things happen. Enjoy the process, it is very rewarding.
  19. I now have a beautiful 50 gallon planted tank and soon plan to upgrade to a 110 gallon. All plants were in ok shape and I don't think I lost anything.
  20. My favorite floating plant is Frogbit. It reproduces quite well and I find that my cichlids love the extra when it grows too much. I also use it in my smaller tanks and betta bowls to prevent jumping out.
