  1. Will need a picture to identify your HOB filter. When thats up im sure someone can ID it for you. How does the media fit into though? Like horizontally or vertically and is the media in cages or prepackaged in any way? Kyle
  2. they are typically something like 24"x48" I think. They are also quite cheap from what I remember, around $20 each Kyle
  3. It should be fine. I have 6 cichlids in a 40 gallon with limited to no issues. The only problem cichlid I had was a yellow tail acei which I had to drop off at Petland. It constantly picked on my Jewel and Tiawan reef. In total I have a Jewel, Tiawan reef, Demasoni, Eureka red, Yellow lab, Black calvus cichlid. All of them are 1.5-2.5". None pick on eachother, but that isnt as many as you plan to have in your 35. Try it out with 3 of each and go from there. My fish are about to go into the 110 I have in my back yard waiting for a stand though.. Good luck and Rusties are one of my girlfriends favorites! Very nice cichlids Kyle
  4. LOL I doubt you've ever seen a texas cichlid, especially if you don't think this is one. go to the red deer petsmart. they had a breeding pair but the male died "mysteriously" but they have had the female there for a number of months. BTW: the name tag reads, Texas cichlid But like I said they are adults and like I also said, Ive never seen a juvinile Kyle
  5. Well this is not a adult is it? What would you say it is then? My vote is still on some Herichthys. Sorry im not sure what it is, I was just stating that I doubt it to be a Texas cichlid, though I do realise it can change quite a bit from now to a full colour adult Kyle
  6. welcome to the forum. Cichlids are an amazing and beautiful fresh water fish that have pulled me in also. I gradually find nicer and nicer cichlids and cant stop buying them! Hope to see some pictures of your tanks posted up Kyle
  7. from the adult texas cichlids I have seen, I would definitely say its not one Kyle
  8. I ALWAYS feed mine about an hour before putting my hands in there. I have 10-11" reds so I dont feel like testing the size of their bite Kyle
  9. their teeth are so sharp you dont even feel it really. Just a quick pinch. Its a very clean cut, so no scar. They were in pails and I dripped a bit of blood in each pail to see their reaction. None of them seemed to care or even move really Kyle
  10. pretty good for him, not so well for me Kyle
  11. Ive been bit by one smaller than any of the ones I own and it was a bleeder! Kyle
  12. Its not so much the blood in the water, although Im sure that is an attractive smell to them. The one sole Pygo that gets a bite and in turn, returns to the shoal without injury and a fuller belly gives the others the incentive needed to take their share without worrying about injury. They react as a group in a manner that is typically 1 for all. When one decides to do something the others watch carefully and then take appropriate actions once they observe no danger and some benifit to their stomachs Kyle
  13. HAHA I wouldnt worry about the pygos. I can say for sure they will be the last ones living in that tank at the end of the day. When it all boils down, they will always be the tougher fish if its just a matter of fighting that your worried about. If one gets a little hungry, thats all it takes. Once he takes a bite the other 2 will too. Kyle
  14. welcome to the forum. Ive been finding it to be a good helpful place so far. Post some pics of the africans Kyle

  16. I guess that Alberta Petsmarts decided to finally take part in the deal and are selling FX5s for $149 off normal price. That puts them at a resonable price of $254 now. Its a damn good deal for the filter your getting. Im picking on up on payday next week Kyle
  17. and easier to place in a room. Long tanks arent as good looking in my opinion either. I like a taller tank when the height will get used Kyle
  18. Sometimes it sounds like his jaw is hitting the glass. Almost seems like it should hurt him but he doesnt seem to care lol Kyle
  19. http://www.bcaquaria.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34276 The guys on BCAquaria are saying that the FX5s are on sale at Petsmart BC locations for $254.99 which is a $149 off the regular price! The sale is ending march 22nd apparently I called the Red Deer store and asked if they were doing the same deal and she told me their price was $350 right now. Anyone know of any Petsmarts selling them for the same price as in BC? Kyle
  20. First video is funny. My RD hates his magnet cleaner too! Kyle
  21. They are one of those types of fish that get a little jumpy when they dont understand or like what is going on. Mine are better now that they are very comfortable in their tank and with me, but that natural fight or flight reaction will always be there. With my Hydor ETH, the temp is ALWAYS bang on 79 deg. Never fluctuates and I keep 2 thermometers in that tank. Ive had it for over a year with 0 issues Kyle
  22. What ended up happening with your tank? What did you end up buying? Kyle
  23. What size of tank? Im doing a stand right now too. Just need more supplies and I can finish it. Looks like a nice setup Kyle
  24. I would stick to the Jager. Would be stupid to install a Hydor on the canister outlet and then have a Rena on the inside of the tank too. In my case the Hydor eth is only on a 80 gallon but its the best investment Ive made for that tank. The Red bellies tend to break heaters Kyle
  25. I dont understand why you would say that.. JD all look like that from what Ive personally seen. A friend has one about 8" and it looks exactly the same as this one. Very nice looking fish IMO Kyle
