  1. Congrats on the snail babies! What are the eggs on the glass from?
  2. My 4 year old is begging me for her own tank. What better excuse to set up another one? lol

  3. I've been told that it could be a bacteria/fungal problem that causes their barbels to rub off. A good water change, gravel vac, and a slight raise in temp may be all it needs? I changed to sand last year, and I haven't noticed a problem with barbels since, so maybe the substrate does make a big difference?
  4. They have beautiful colors on their fins! I agree, AC is dangerous lol I never walk out empty handed, but I'm always happy, so it's okay
  5. http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=35651&hl=auction&fromsearch=1 All the info needed is in the first post
  6. My daughter names evey orange fish I get Nemo. I also have a Clown Pleco I named Pickcles and my African Dwarf Frog is named Tybalt (from Shakespeare). I also had a female Dalmation Molly that my husband named The Sea Cow lol
  7. I would say eggs as well, but it may also be the "saddle" or just an organ. If it's behind the eyes on the back of the shrimp, and has a saddle shape, it's probably just that. It's like their egg sack before it get's fertilized.
  8. Pygmy Chain Sword does well too. I wish I could think of the names of the rest of my plants, excluding that already mentioned Vals. Well I know my Amazon Swords do well in sand, but those would take over a 20L in no time.
  9. With the hornwort there to help it then he may be fine. Getting a turkey baster or long tweezers to spot feed it would help too. I use tweezers to take a pinch of bloodworms and put it in front of my little Tybalt (yes I gave my frog a name from Shakespeare lol). That way you can see them eat and don't have to worry. Plus it's fun to do! I agree with kimmi that Assassin snails work really well. I have to get more MTS (malaysian trumpet snails) to keep my sand from clumping. Those little assassins made a good meal of what I have lol Nerite's work really well for algae control. I have a Zebra Nerite in my 55g and it's big enough that the assassins leave them alone. I remember when I took over an old roomates tank, it was covered in algae...really bad. I added 2-4 Horned Nerites and the algae was gone pretty quick...well I helped with scraping some off with a toothbrush (they work better than the scrubbers you can buy). Plus they don't breed in freshwater, and the assassins breed really slow.
  10. Is it an African Clawed Frog or an African Dwarf Frog? If it's a Clawed frog then it'll likely eat some of the smaller fish when it get's bigger. If it's a Dwarf Frog, then it might have trouble getting to the surface for air, since they aren't the best swimmers and often have trouble competing for food in a tank with lot's of fish. The crayfish may also eat some of the fish, but fast swimming fish should be fine. Also, if you have one ramshorn snail, it'll be 100+ in no time. There are ways to deal with them though, like Assassin snails or giving them to someone with loaches or other snail eating fish. If you really want to try putting shrimp in someday, you could always start with a few ghost shrimp and see how the fish react. At least that way if the fish devour them, you're not out a lot of money. Plus the fish get a tasty snack!
  11. Hello, and welcome to the site! Lot's of nice and helpful people on here
  12. I think I've had the same thing happen to me before. I clicked the link for "View New Content" on the forums main page, and that would come up. Check the columns on the left side after you're at the page (after clicking view new content). There's "By Content Type" and "By Time Period". Try selecting different things. When it's on "forums" and "new since my last visit" and you visited the site maybe 10 minutes earlier, it won't show any content unless someone posted something within that 10 minutes since you last visited. If you change it to "forums" and "past 24 hours" then you'll see all new content for that time period. I hope that made sense, and helps!
  13. Thank you both! I'll continue to not use any ferts and see how they do. If they grow bigger, I'll re-home 2 of them
  14. Do you think my amazon swords have enough room? http://s1091.photobu...nt=DSC08090.jpg Their are 3 of them in there, all about 12'' tall. I've thought about trying to split them in half to make smaller plants, but I don't know if that would harm them or not. I tried to find info about splitting them but nothing solid that says it's okay or how to properly do it, and I'm not sure at what point they'll be too big for the 55g.
  15. Thanks very much! What are you running in your planted tank for lighting? I have no idea...a flouresent light? I got it with the tank and never thought to ask, and I haven't bothered to look for a name/number on it. All I know is it's really bright like yours is and it works well. I should find out though. If the light burns out, then I'm gonna need to rush out and get a new one...knowing what I have would be helpful if that happens lol I agree that nerite snails would be a good addition. I love my Zebra and horned nerite's, so cute and the best algae eaters I've seen!
  16. The new lights look really good! Those plants are gonna grow really fast now. Made me think about how much my plants have grown, and looking at a picture from November and at the tank today, it's amazing. My 3 amazon swords take up half the tank lol I got them all when they were about 3'' and I think they're now about 12'' tall and about 6-8'' wide?
  17. What kind of algae eater is it that you have? If it's a chinese algae eater, then those buggers are mean and will kill off other fish.
  18. Looking good so far, and that's a nice piece of driftwood! I was really lucky and actually found a piece of drifwood at AC that I liked...so much for not spending much there lol How are the val's doing? I hope I was right about how many I gave you. Look forward to seeing it after it's cleared up more and rearranged the way you want it
  19. Wouldn't it work to just wrap it in a blanket, strap it, and use a dolly?

    Hello

    Hello, and welcome back
  21. Fertilizer helps as well. You could always get some free plant clippings from other members to start off with. I was lucky to receive many free plants from other members, and it was a great way to get started. Getting some scissors is good too. You'll want to cut off browning/dead leaves to help keep the plant healthy. I would suggest trying to get some taller plants (like vals), maybe an amazon sword and pygmy swords, and maybe even try some mosses. I found those to be great starter plants. My amazon swords are huge now, and I've never used ferts or CO2. I'm sure your plants will grow nice and healthy, you seem to have it set up nicely for them already
  22. lol Nothing wrong with being addicted to something that's so pretty! The one in behind the all black Angel is pretty. That orange is so dark!
  23. They're beautiful! Especially love the colors of the first one!
