  1. I'm moving this to the ACE forum. Hopefully Raymond will give you the right steps.
  2. I did this on a 75gal with the HMF powered by a powerhead at the bottom of the filter and CO2 bubbled into the intake of the powerhead.
  3. It looks like brush algae. How old are your bulbs - if nothting's changed and it just showed up, old bulbs is typically the cause. Like Shambhalove_ said, EI is based on using a 50% weekly WC to reset the tank. If you don't like using buckets, get a garden hose or python-type system. The only other thing I'd recommend, if everything else fails, is increase your CO2 a bit.
  4. Alberta Discus and CanadianAquaFarm both seem to carry quality discus and (have) sponsor this site.
  5. I think most of us on the Mod/Admin share the opinion that this site is a great place for open and honest discussion on opinions and experiences in the hobby. But, I'm also sure that we all agree that if even a hint of a flame war starts, the discussion will be shut down. So far, so good...
  6. If you want to save ALL of the fry, move the ornament with Dad. Otherwise, just leave it as is. Most fry will get picked off, but you'll probably have a few survive each batch. Once common BNs start spawning, they'll typically keep going around a week after the previous fry leave the cave.
  7. I bought my Safe a few years ago, and whenever I put some in a new pkg to have near my tanks (home or work, etc.) I write on the container w/ a sharpie the dosing instructions. I am currently using 1/4 tsp per 100gal, which will definitely take care of any Chloramine, as well as any ammonia (which is not there anyway....).

I don't know if you'd call us support.... enablers is probably a better term
  9. Henry is marketing kick-sleds and raw dog food for his wife's business. He's got a few other things going on as well. He brings in some of the best Arctic Char fillets I've tasted, too!!
  10. Looks like I'm back in the BN pleco game. Here's about 30+ fry, and the dad is back guarding what looks to be an even bigger clutch today!
  11. I just did some searching around town for the lowest price and I figured Lee Valley is as good as you can get. Even after shipping from some of the Canadian online retailers, the price was comparable at Lee Valley.
  12. I just bought a lot of 10 off ebay for $12ea. Free shipping from ON, should be here on Thursday.
  13. I think it'd would be adequate for a 50... if it's a planted tank, it's more than enough
  14. I looked on the HD site today and they're about $30ea
  15. I've got a couple T8 fixtures I was going to recycle b/c I wanted to move toward a combo of LED+T5... I might give these guys a try first.
  16. I have the heater and intake hidden behind an HMF behind the rocks on my Tropheus tank. An inline heater would be better b/c then you can heat the return water only, instead of heating the water going to the filter... I think it'd be more efficient, anyway.
  17. I usually do it over the top, but they can be drilled in as well.
  18. Take a look thru my journal section. I've done a few large planted tanks in the past. If you have a metal stand with some type of skirting around it, you'll have plenty of space for a canister filter or two and your CO2 canister. I like using hard PVC to pipe my canisters; I give them a quick scuff with some fine sandpaper and paint them black with Krylon Fusion spray paint. I also paint the back pane black. If you're going to make the tank a room divider, check out my Tropheus tank journal.
  19. Getting the media I need at this time of year is quite the chore! It's frozen, so I have to get the landscape store to get the loader to load up my 2 pails! I finally got enough rinsed for another GB. Since my last lighting FIASCO (anybody want 24 72" purple T5HOs?), I remembered I had a bunch of 12W LED Spotlights, so I went out and bought 2 48" Sunblasters to supliment. My 7yr old son helped me put this fixture together today. Here it is turned off Here are the spotlights... I thought I put in all "mixed spectrum", but looks like the far end is all red... I'll dig around to see if I have another mixed. I know I have all red, all blue and mixed kicking around. I might switch things up if I want to get things blooming. I set up the smaller GB as an herb garden. I planted most of these seeds a week ago And looks like the Thyme is already sprouting! I got the fixture built just in time!
  20. I don't know if I'd put it in the display of a tank, as it can collect detritus over time. It could be a good mechanical/biological filter media, tho. Wherever you put it for filtration, just watch to make sure it's not getting too clogged.
  21. IME, once it's there, it's tough to get rid of w/o actually treating it. I've had some success spot treating w. Metricide/Excel, but blackout is the only method I've used that works every time for me.
  22. IME, the only way African cichlids get bloat when fed a high-quality pellet like NLS is if you feed too much at one time, and it's happened to me only once in about 10 years of feeding NLS. Not all cichlids will eat duckweed, but if they do, it's a great food! Give it a try
  23. There's a 2nd batch of eggs in there, yesterday. Looks like both females are ready to spawn! These fish aren't even 2" SL! If I remember correctly, their father was a long-fin, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of fish result from these spawns.
  24. I don't know where I first read it, but there is a lot of evidence showing that algae shows up when there is a nutrient imbalance, and cyano is always there when NO3 is low. I know you say that your NO3 is 5-10; that's low for a planted tank, and may in fact be 0 if your test kit is old. Try to aim for 20ppm NO3, and you'll also want some PO4 in there as well - around .5-1ppm. K is also needed, but deficiency doesn't seem to be causative for algae. I think the evidence shows (it's been a while since I've researched it all) that when plants have ALL the nutrients they need, they inhibit algae growth
