  1. You gonna hook me up Curtis?
  2. I've thought about it but never got started. There are a few on AA Galeen in Edmonton, Fly Fisher in Calgary, SuperGuppyGirl in Devon
  3. Safeway brand has a 100% ammonia. It is colourless. The bottle is that frosted/clear plastic and the label is blue and green. It reads "All purpose Cleaner Ammonia REGULAR". The ingredients are listed as: water, ammonium hydroxide. Works like magic
  4. If you mean ADA Aquasoil like Amazonia, I use it in my shrimp tanks. It will buffer pH down into the low 6 range if you have soft water and maybe down to 7 if you are running tap. I also got mine at Pisces in Calgary. If you are planning on doing a carpet of any sort, you may want to add the powder type AS on top of the normal size AS so that it is easier to plant and get the little carpet plants to stay. What are your tank plans?
  5. I'm not sure exactly, I don't have one of those laser thermometers. If it helps, I can hold the heat sink at the bottom on the sides and it isn't uncomfortably hot to the touch. It is quite warm but not scorching by any means.
  6. I just wanted to share my new LED setup for the 4 gallon pico reef tank. I was using two GU10 1x3w cool white + 2x3w actinic for a couple of years and wanted to try something different. I ordered a 10w Chip on Board LED module, thermal epoxied it to a little heat sink, drilled some holes for wires and siliconed a glass guard for the actual LED. I'm really liking the nice white look. We'll see how the coral and shrimp like the new light. It is much less spot lighty than the GU10 bulbs. This is the old LED New 10W unit And running on the tank And FTS. Apparently I need to do a water change :P I think I might see if I can run two units w/o the actinic on my planted 10G.
  7. For some strange reason I've recently started finding snails interesting. There was a time where I didn't want any snails at all, but I had a hitchhiker pond snail that grew up to about 1.5cms and it is pretty neat. Do you have a favorite type of snail? What makes it unique?
  8. Okay gang. I asked, you answered and now... a new project called Kirinashi. Check it out: http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=41902
  9. How about a bulkhead strainer like the reefers use? http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/bulkhead-overflow-strainers.html Get two so that when you pull the dirty one and put in the clean one, then take your time cleaning the dirty one?
  10. You are probably looking for an engineer. What you are suggesting should work in theory. You will still need to be able to adjust your flow either with a recirculation line or adjustable pump so that you don't bottleneck at the drain. If you can get the flow in the tank to get crap to hit the drain is another question I suspect that you won't have issues with the drilling part if you have the tank supported along the entire bottom. There might be issues with bulkhead sealing. They must have specs for them to check? With the drain on the bottom, will you be running substrate? If yes, what is the plan to keep from sucking substrate and then clogging the line... And on that topic... It is gonna be hell cleaning that, plumbing snake?
  11. I love the motion in the first picture!

    Hello

Welcome. What do you keep right now?
  13. +10 for the drip. I drip all water changes for shrimp regardless if I'm changing water parameters or not. That means if I'm off on my matching it won't be catastropy. With how much we probably all have going on it is a precaution against our own distractedness... Saved me more than once.
  14. I would do the same as you have chosen. Definitely cater to the the CRS.

You are gonna be so broke

    First Saltwater

I might have to do the same then. I've searched all over in town and anyone who has a gate valve wants an arm and a leg and a kidney for them. What is the stocking plan? 100% clams? What about filtration? Lights? C'mon. Details or is it all very :ph43r: ?

    First Saltwater

Welcome to the salty side. Where did you get your gate valves from?
  18. What silicone did you decide on? 1)Tape is good but use the painter type because it releases easier 2)Make sure you feather the silicone down to just about nothing at the edges where the tape meets your silicone. If you don't the edge can pull away when you remove the tape 3) Do not wet your finger/tool to smooth the silicone bead. Water will cause the silicone to skin. This means if you need to do a second pass, it will get ugly fast. If you go dry, multiple passes can be done. 4) peel the masking tape as soon as you have finished smoothing. If you wait, the silicone may lift with the tape. 5) if your tape is in long strips, you can twirl it around a stick so that it doesn't swing around and get silicone all over. 6) if you get silicone all over, dont wipe it. Let it cure then razor it off.
  19. These aren't the cell cultured ones right? They are bunches in the tanks?
  20. definitely try the custom configurator do-hicky http://www.bmlcustom.com/custom-led-strip/
  21. RKKs are pretty cool and I didn't even know about black sakura. Do those black's breed true?
  22. Tiger prawns are actually Penaeus monodon? I think they are not easy to come by live and they are salt water too... Though I've often contemplated getting the live prawns from T&T Supermarket and see how they do in my little reef tank. [Edit: I can't type on the phone very well apparently :p]
  23. So I got to thinking, if you had $99 in Christmas money to spend on shrimp at the store and you could pick from the shrimps in the tank, what shrimps would you really want to see and pick from so that you could get the ones you really liked? Would you get all of the same type? or a mixed bag?
