  2. Not to confuse you any more than all the digital camers available; check out this link. http://www.dpreview.com Left hand side there is a section to chose from. Reviews, cameras, forums, etc. and you thought keeping fish was complicated.... :smokey: Chose the best / for the best price. Canon, Nikon, Agfa, HP, Hasselblad...ouch...$$$$.$$ :w00t: Also, because of all the recent upgrades/new models available ... do not be afraid to purchase a used model. P.S. stay away from plastic optics.. :cuss: In the AlbertaAquatica photo section, there are remarkable pics. check it out. PM the shooters . HTH & Good luck  and when you find the one that stands out; please let me know ... I still can not deciede Smokey
  3. Hmmmmm ... choosing between a XP-3 or a Eheim. [ a big Eheim ]. Over the years I have formed a philosopy about Eheim products [ I have owned many of their great products ] _ Eheim's are green - same color as money  Personally speaking, I am a devote and user of sumps. So I am a bit biased. I also hold a record for putting the most amount of water into a 33 gallon tank_ 50 gallons... :grrrrr: top that one, ehhh... Jodaye_ you say you will have time on your side, to make a decesion ... great I like to suggest, to hobbiests, two things: 1 - join a great fish forum, post questions. 2 - Join a local Aquarium club. You have already had the foresight to do the first; CONGRADULATIONS   and BTW _ welcome to AlbertaAquactia Second - If you are in the Edmonton area; think about taking in a A.C.E. meeting. [Aquarium Club of Edmonton]. // Calgary area - C.A.S. { Calgary Aquarium Society]. Either club is internationally know. Great people, and you just may find someone who has some equipement laying around. Thirdly - Stay tuned. I'm sure the other members of A.A can be of help. { some/many do order form the U.S. suppliers] great oppertunity to get in on a order and reduce shipping costs]}. HTH
  4. The A.C. 110 is the new name for the A/C 500. diffence is they now also come with bio.media. [suggested retail in Canada is $109.99.[ ouch!!].. Everything else is the same [ foams are now 110] lol. Just new boxes. all the A.C. products are coming out in new packaging/ etc.... and a slight price rise.. To DRILL the tank_ or not to DRILL THE TANK. Good Question :w00t: A sump is a great unit on any tank. Small or large. Out of sight; extremely efficient; all mechanical in the sump; constant water level in the tank; easy to do the W/C's; very easy to clean and maintain..mpe The intial cost: Drilling the tank; [ $10.00 to $25.00] or [less if you have it done by the manf.]. The sump container; anything from a glass tank to a good rubbermaid continer. larger the better.eg:_ $8.00 [20 gal. rubbermaid ]; 33 gallon glass tank free/used or new )) A submeragable pump. Capable of pumbing 500 to 1000 gph at the height of the tank top. [ say 6 feet]. $50.00 to $130.00; depending on the quality of the pump/efficienty. Sump Media - for mechanical and bio-logical filtration. One time purchase! Lots of choices. check around. The more media the better..mpe. BONUS - once you have the submergable pump you no longer need to "BUCKET" water. The pump can do it for you. [ Caution - this could cause a slight weight gain, of the hobbiest, due to lack of back breaking lifting 5 gallon buckets of water][ and more time to sit and watch the fish]. again mpe..... Jodaye, there you go, three choices to choose from: Hang on back filter; eg_A/C 500/110 [ double up on the foams is reccomended] Canister filter - the larger the better or A Sump. the next frontier... and you thought it would be simple to choose.... :well: Best reguards. What are your thoughts[??]. Smokey
  5. Thank you for sharing your expierence with us. VERY Much appreciated  Be sure too keep us updated on the fry's journey_ great pics; btw  Smokey

  7. A Method that is impartial: A random generated draw. To be eligable; members would sign in, on a topic site set up for this reason. [ just posting "hello" would be sufficient]. This site would only be open for a specific time [ say 30 days [?]].
  8. quote>>Ive put it into my AC500 between my sponges like you say...<<.... Good method. The "floss" will fine clean the water before it gets to the top [ second] foam. this will allow the top foam to be a better bio-logical filter / and stay cleaner.. Keep an "eye" on the floss. this stuff is very efficient in trapping / becoming saturated with debre. If you see your top 500 foam rising [ :w00t: ] time to change the floss!! Got to love the large media area in the 500's. The plastic Sheets are called "Knitting mesh/sheets". Great stuff!! 8 x 10 or 11 x 14 inch sizes are available, differnt colors. Cheap!! cut to fit, does not contaminent the water [ non-toxic]. Putting floss in a canister filter... hmmmmm. Rick & Rudy & CptC. have said it best ; be careful. Let us know how you like the stuff. Smokey
  9. Jods2518 - the Filstar xp3 [ for $95.00 u.s.] is a good price. Check around for local prices. The filters are very easy to clean and maintain, 3 - large baskets for the media. Positive water flow shut off. No problem to start. Air locks are never a problem! Generally a very nice filter. At only 350 gph, you may find it a slightly undersized for a 120-150g. tank. [depending on the tank foot print_ 4 foot or 6 foot]. and the livestock load. This can be solved by moving the output flow [return water] so it pushes the debre towards the intake stem; [opposite ends of the tank]. OR you could instal a small PowerHead to help move the debre towards the intake pickup. An Air pump w/airstones also help . Keep the water in motion. The hoses supplied are very flexiable/ and of ample lenght. Being transparent, they do show "crud" build-up.[ Doesn't matter if we can see it or not.. it does develop. ] Just helps us know when to clean them. Those little brush cleaners, on a flex-line are great; 36 or 48 inch long, for keeping the hoses clean. Also great for cleaning the impellar well and internal surfaces on the filter . I installed { November/2004} a 2xp on a 50 gallon tank.... replacement for the 5 year old 303 Fluval - [which died after air got into the impellar, ran dry, and over heated the motor unit } Cleaned the filter 2x. Very easy and much easier than the old 303.!! NICE UNIT !!  MPE. HTH Smokey

  15. Generally the cheapest Ammonia is the one your looking for. No added fragrances, etc. Wal-mart, C.T. etc crary the stuff. Same with bleach , the cheapest is purest. No fancy stuff added. The NO-NAME BRANDS; Safeway. etc. Read the back _ ingredients... ammonia water. Smokey
  16. Well, that explanes that... :grrrrr: Smokey
  17. Either way __ great idea! lol.... I was looking at the pic and the grey cells kicked in: I like the idea of the sponge filter to cycle water into the uit. _____But::::: rotate the container 90 degrees, cut a large opening in one side, which would now becomes the top. The removeable Lid would become the end cap and It already has an opening for the water to exit. A couple of suctin cups [ ones used on some heater holders] could be attached to the container, through holes in the container side and hold the whole unit in place. EH EH :smokey: :w00t: Smokey
  18. You're a very busy person. lol.... I like your marsh theme, sounds interestiong.
  19. Great invention. Garhan.
  20. Great article, Garhan. Keep fiddling with it. I remember picking up brand new I.V. bags w/tubes and flow regulator at a second hand shop in Edmonton. I have to laugh.. :smokey: ; when I was working with Lexan - I needed small syringes to administer the liquid "glue". I went to a local Pharmacy to pick some up; simply..eh! Nope...third degree looks, etc. I ended up at G. & E. Pharmacy and picked them up, with disposialbe fine needles, for 50 cents. I mentioned what I was doing and they said NO Problem. Smokey
