  1. Thats a very tough question! Someone would have to know if the cellular and molecular biology of Aros is such that they can effectively regulate the homeostasis of potassium ions the same way as chloride ions. I know for humans we have separate trans-membrane proteins for active and facilitated diffusion of K+ and Cl- ions, so ingesting those two salts would not be equal for us. Whats the volume of water being treated?
  2. My iPhone 5s broke, and was replaced by apple under warranty. I then received three, brand new, out of the box, defective iPhone 5s in a ROW from the Apple store. The manager told me it was a one in a million chance to get 3 in a row that were defective. I believed him, and still use iPhones because I think they are awesome. I was pissed off having to make so many trips to the Apple store, but my anecdotal experience did not define the overall quality of the millions of units sold. I think the same might be for your heater.
  3. I usually see them when I kick my canisters back on after a water change. My rainbows love them, and to my knowledge they are harmless.
  4. Hey im curious to know how this fish is. I went with a friend of mine to a LFS here in Calgary and there was a tank of juvenile Oscars that all had this issue. Neither of us had seen that before and we passed on them thinking it was a genetic defect. Did you resolve it? (Sorry I dont have any advice for you).
  5. Another anecdote, but I have used Paraguard on one outbreak in my tank, and one in my fathers and it worked really well. I think I did a 5 day run with it at >80 F for both.
  6. That is an impressive collection you have there! Welcome to the community
  7. If im interpreting those pictures properly I see a gnarly chip but no crack? I would just razor blade out the silicone in that corner and do a nice fat bead down the inside and call it good. If you placed more glass with silicone (like jvision said) that would be ever more bomber.
  8. Hey guys I live in SE Calgary and have extra Levamisole powder. I ordered some to deworm my 120G tank I just finished stocking, so if anyone is in need they can PM me and we can work something out. Thanks
  9. Rainbows! Geleen has some beauties for sale right now. The Lake Aytinjo M. Boesemanis will (in my opinion) be the most colorful fish you could add to your community setup.
  10. What a beauty! Thank You!
  11. I used to buy problematic fish from LFS and my microbiology courses became very relevant when I was treating for parasitic/bacterial/fungal infections monthly. Some of the things I encountered I had to swab and use differential media to figure out what type of fungi I was dealing with. Callamanus worms taking out a whole 60 Gallon with 50-75 live bearers. It was stressful, disheartening, and stupid expensive too. Since getting on this forum I sold all my old stuff and started from scratch, and now I buy awesome healthy fish from members of this forum. I know they are raised in careful and ethical situations and I am loving life now. I have had one case of Ichthyophthirius (Ich) which some believe is an inevitability, and thats it. I'm not labeling all LFS as "bad" but my new experience is so much more pleasant than my old one. I love meeting people in their homes and garages talking about fish and learning, rather than going to a LFS and potentially getting horrible fish and horrible advice. Last and most least of all its cheaper buying from community members than the LFS. I now feel better knowing that i'm not perpetuating the mistreatment of fish by going to the "big box stores" and buying stuff from them. Thank you to the people of this community who are passionate about good fish keeping, and share the hobby with people like me!
  12. Simplest questions first for me. Are you using a water conditioner suitable for Chloramines (assumption because your in Edmonton)? Have you changed anything in the last while (added new fish, different water conditioner, ETC...)?
  13. I had Callamanus worms, and the Fenbendazole got rid of them. Round one I initially used metronidazole and it had no effect. Round two Levamisole was somewhat effective. Round three was Fenbendazole and it worked really well. Lots of good info out there on treatment method, and delivery via the fish food (assuming its still eating). They are horrible nematodes and if they are protruding from the vent, they have caused a lot of internal damage on the fish, and in my experience it probably will not survive. Super sorry but good luck Source: Levamisole I got from Angelfins online, Fenbendazole from a AA member here in town. I also had a hell of a time trying to find it.
  14. I have a male and female S.P. in my 120 and they are totally scared of me. I have had them for about a month, they are fully grown, and spawned 1-2 weeks ago. I now have little S.P. wigglers all over my substrate. They seem to be happy, and my water chemistry is beautiful. BUT when I approach the tank, they run and hide. If im working on my computer and not making eye contact they slowly start to come out and swim a bit, then the second I turn my head and make eye contact, they run for the hiding spots. Is this normal? How do I make myself more friendly? I am actually a nice guy and love them so much, and need to communicate this to my S.P's Thanks
  15. I have used a concentrated methylene blue dip for my Betta before. I used a Q-tip to rub the infected spot while it was in the bath, and it worked very well. The intake strainer fell off of my canister filter which caused an injury. The injury developed a white spot which I thought was fungal. I thought that rubbing it would help remove the fungi, and help the MB to get deeper into the scales. Keep us updated

    Hello

Hi Eryn and welcome! You have found the right place if your looking for people who are passionate about aquariums. I spend way too much time reading on here, but i'm getting smarter ;-)
  17. A colleague of mine (who happens to have his masters degree in Chemistry and is very astute) pointed something out to me that I completely missed. PPM is MASS / Volume! So in a fishless cycle if your adding 1 ppm of ammonia your gonna get 3.65 ppm of Nitrate. Were not dealing with molar ratios so the Stoich numbers are irrelevant, were dealing with molar masses :-) So that takes care of my confusion, and it helps me out a lot because i discovered I had a lot of decaying material in my aquaponics system that were causing a ridiculous amount of Nitrates in tank. I did a good clean out of my grow beds, did some water changes, and now my cycle is progressing beautifully, and i no longer have 80 ppm of Nitrates  in my system. When I pulled some plants out I neglected to remove all the fine filamentous roots, and these guys started decaying and causing trouble. Lesson learned!
  18. I'm curious to know what salt concentrations do you M. boesemani enthusiasts have in your tanks? I read in the Rainbowfish bible (Adrian Tappin) that they have between 0-500 mg/L in the wild. I have always added salt to my freshwater tanks believing that it assists in osmoregulation. In the past I have followed the API recommendation of 1 Tbsp per 5 Gallons which gives a really rough 130mg / L concentration, but I’m looking to snipe the water conditions for my new Aytinjos. Thanks!
  19. I'm in South Calgary (Glenmore Water) and my pH is 8.1-8.2 every single day, and has been for two years. From what I have read, a lot of freshwater species have huge pH shifts in their water in their natural habitat during rainy/dry seasons, and have evolved coping mechanisms to suit. I have never touched the pH in my aquariums with no noticeable losses. All the pro's I have talked to say keep the pH constant and the fish will develop enzymes that will suit it. Trouble arises when you get pH shifts so don't mess with it.
  20. I bought a used Fluval 406 Canister filter off of a dude here in Calgary. Looks like its brand new, and runs well. Only issue is that every... 30 seconds or so I hear "the sound" and some air bubbles come whipping out of the outflow. They are very fine bubbles and the flow is not interrupted. Is this normal? I know that you can buy a impeller rebuild type kit, but before I spend the cash I wanted to make sure. Thanks friends Andrew
  21. Reading a scientific journal on the efficacy of medication (Melafix) is a breath of fresh air! So much anecdotal information out there, makes my head spin. Thank you for posting this RD. Andrew
  22. I have done a lot of water testing in the SAG-D (oilsands), and something we pay close attention to is called "gas void fraction". Were looking for gasses trapped in water to simplify it. We find all sorts of nasty stuff in water when we bring it to our atmosphere. If I was in this situation I would draw water, and leave it overnight with a airstone going. Bringing the water to your atmosphereic pressure and disturbing it should liberate any gasses that may have leached into your well. In my experience gasses trapped in water want out, you just need to help them. Not sure about adding more Prime since your not on (chlorinated / chloraminated) city water. My best guess was there was something that is toxic in super low concentrations that wreaked havoc. Good luck with this!
