What to do with abundance of swordtails?

I set up and fully cycled a 33gallon tank in the late fall. Within 3 weeks of adding 2 female and 1 male swordtails I had a fry who lived through the danios. That fry is getting bigger and bigger (of course), and now we have another who-knows-how-many teeny tiny fry and 2 at least in between. The biggest is probably about 2cm long now. I'm not sure what to do... we love having the babies. It's fun for my 5 year old to see the progression of pregnancy to fry etc, but we can't keep going on like this unless we find a source to take our fry. Anyone know somewhere that will take them in the Strathmore/Calgary area? Or does anyone have experience with giving them away? Are they desirable enough or are they too common? If I can't find good homes for the fry I'm going to have to separate studly from the gals. Of course then I'll have to deal with if there's more young studlies in with the gals and then it's about inbreeding and... *screams* I did NOT expect that they would do this well in my tank. I'm honoured and all, but my goodness!

If I do separate him the only place I have right now is in with my betta (hopefully soon a 5 gallon tank)... but wouldn't they likely fight too much due to both their testosterone fueled desire to fight?

ANY input at all would be welcome! :)

I'm sure if you post them in the livestock section you will find good homes for them.

A few ideas....

Posting them on here.

If big enough, bring some to the CAS auction.

LFS might take some off your hands.

Giving away is GREAT (but may be used as feeders LOL)

Talking friends into taking them off your hands LOL

Posting them on here http://www.usedcalgary.com/ or here http://www.kijiji.ca/?dest=www

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone. I'd prefer they don't go as food... though maybe that's a bit hypocritical since some of my danios have feasted on them I'm sure. ;) I can gurantee anything that survives in there is a smart little cookie and knows how to swim fast and hide well!

What size is it best to wait for before transporting them?

Please go to your profile and update your location - someone nearby will probably be willing to drop by to pick them up for you.

As for size...any size is probably good, as long as they are free-swimming. Fry are pretty hardy.

Fish stores prefer that they are over an inch :D

We've got a bit of time before they're big enough for me to be comfortable moving them, but I'll post when we're ready to give them away. I have a couple of friends/coworkers I might be able to coerce into taking some. ;)

After that we just need to decide if we can get the male off viagra or if we need to split him up. ;) Not sure I want to end up in the swordtail distribution business long term, but if there's enough demand I might let them keep it up for a little while.

Thanks a heap for all your advice, and the reminder that I hadn't done my profile and signature. :)

If you are still in the frymaking business when it gets warmer I wouldn't mind shipping some up here to Edmonton. I'm a huge swortail fan and pineapples are my favorite coloration.

Swords, guppies, and mollies usually have young every 21 to 28 days. You also don't need a male in with them all the time for the females will store sperm for later use.

Oh great! So they'll keep having babies even if I remove the male? LOL Well... we sure love them... they're beautiful fish, so hang in there, those of you who are interested... apparently we'll be in the supplying business very soon ;)

The most I've had from guppies and mollies is 3 spawns without males. The swords dropped the second batch in the com. tank and are getting fat again. Have'nt noticed any fry yet, But the gouramis like live food too.

  • 2 years later...

I know it's an old topic, but I'm having the same issue right now.

I have 3 creamsicle mollies and one dalmatian/creamsicle/pot bellied molly. I call her Ugly molly. She's so ugly, she's cute.

When the wife picked her up from Paradise Pet's in St.Albert. Ugly Molly was pregnant. She gave birth and at last count we have 16 fry swimming around the bottom of the tank. They range from 1/4" - 1/2" in size right now and Ugly Molly is starting to get fat again. So soon we'll have more.

I'm surprised that any of the fry survived. But my Red Tail Black Shark ignores them as do the Zebra Danios.

I'm going to do my best to separate the males from the females, but that will take awhile. By then I'll be completely over run with molly fry.

Does anyone know of a LFS in the Edmonton area that will purchase the fry for either coin or in store credit?
