lclinton
is it do-able? Sand and cichlids included?
jvision
Nitrifying bacteria will colonize every surface they can, so having lots of pourus surfaces in the tank works, regardless of FW or SW.
Ishkabod
I have a piece in my Cichlid tank and once every few months or so a fresh surface is exposed due to calcium dissolveing but it's a very very very slow process and with the hard water we have here the time it would take to decompose completely judging by the amount mine has in the last year would take many many years (I think my very sall skinny piece will last me at least five years before i notice any significant decay) Good Idea just don't pay for Saltwater live rock Buy what is called Dead Rock Good luck L
Funky_Fish14
You can absolutely use the rock itself in saltwater. In terms of organisms living... a few small things, or algaes, can and will live sometimes in freshwater... or in very very low specific gravity (like 1.005). Most things will die however. Their cells will explode because of the lack of salt in the water.
