neely Posted May 1, 2005 Report Share Posted May 1, 2005 (edited) i have a 10g with 4 types of african fry (maybe 50-60 altogether). living together in it. i have an ACmini and an AC300 filtering it the tank. all the fry are pretty close to the same size (1/4in to 3/8in) , and there are no signs of aggression. i have had several die in short periods of time. about a week ago, i had 4 die on me. started being a little more strict on my MC's (every second day now). everything was fine until today when i have dug 6 dead ones out today. they seem physically fine until they start swimming circles and then floundering around on the bottom of the tank. BleedingHeart Posted May 1, 2005 Report Share Posted May 1, 2005 I dont know if the last post I put to your question came through...anyways I suggest testing the water using the three basic kits - PH, Ammonia, Nitrogen. I think you have high nitrite levels by the sounds of it (from too many fish, too much food / waste). If it is the nitrite, do a water change and add "cycle", high ammonia you add an ammonia sack to your filter, and for a high PH level (tap water PH is 7.6 - 8.2 when fish need approx 6) add aquarium salt. HOSStile Posted May 1, 2005 Report Share Posted May 1, 2005 I have about 100 african fry, almost always have that many, 3 varieties in a 10 gallon filtered by one ac mini. When they get to between 1/2 and 3/4 inch I transfer them to a 20 gal. juvey. The only fry I had die was when I took the foam off of the ac intake and my wife stripped a female and 3 or 4 of them got sucked in. IMO and why I feel I have never lost fish due to bad water is 1. I change half of the water twice a week. 2. I feed sparingly many times a day. 3. A lot of people will argue this one but I use gravel in my fry tank. I feel it acts as an additional media for bacteria to keep nitrites down. BTW I have never had a positive nitrite or ammonia reading since I cycled the tank. WELL.... i am not joking- i shut down one of my many tanks and wanted to keep the filter wet and running- i have a custom canopy on my 90 where i have no more cut outs to put anymore ac's on so i decided to throw it on my 10 gal for the time being. im doing 10-15% wc's for the next few days- no deaths today so im keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone have any input as to what might be happening? the toxins in the water are killing your fish, espessially in a 10 gallon tank where there can be only so much beneficial bacteria!!!!!
