lukep77
How does everyone control there hair algae if you have some. I have been picking it out so far, but it just keeps coming back. Is there a fish that likes this stuff? The snails do a slow job at eating it and I would like to keep it under control with out having to keep putting my hands in there. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks L
Pop Eye
I had hair glowlight Rosy barbs and they loved the stuff. IT was gone within 2 days and has never come back.. Edited November 30, 2005 by Pop Eye
Candice
What type of fish do you have in your tank? Amano shrimp, siamese algae eaters and some other fish/shrimp do a good job on algae.
lukep77
I have 2 rope fish, a spiny eal, Platys, a common pleco, chery barbs, khuli loaches, 3 clown loaches and a horse faced loache and 3 glass cats. There some ghost shrimp in there some where, but the rope fish usualy get at them. I might try the highlite Rosy barbs.
HOSStile
I have three 1 inch ameca splendens you can have if you pick them up. Once the hair algae gets their attention they will clean it right out and they will live with almost anything.
lukep77
Sure I will pick them up. Pm me with contact info.
arixonbarnes
The amecas are excellent for cleaning out almost all types of algae. However when they get larger they aren't really very friendly towards many other fish and can shred fins etc (ask Garhan!). So be cautious once they get close to the adult stage (and these aren't the nastiest goodeis). As a matter of fact they could probably (the adults that is) hold their own in a cichlid tank. HOSStile
If they (ameca splendens) get out of hand he can always give them away, the price is right, I never saw them nipping fins, I have them in a 55 planted with angels and gouramis among others, They just annoy me when they chew through my corkscrew vals right in the middle. :grr:
lukep77
That is true HOSStile, As long as they don't destroy all my plants I will be ok with them. Besides they will be going in to a 90g. So they should be ok, I have sent you a PM back HOSStile, just let me know if that works for you. Toirtis
The trick is to breed them, then give away the adults and use the babies until they are too boisterous...

Toirtis
Or until you have a tank full of Frankenfish. Ah, you saw the tank up at Pisces a couple of months back, no doubt. I by no means meant to breed sibling to sibling...just to keep them until they got too big for the other fish.
jvision
When you have algae, it means you've got a nutrient imballance. I do believe that hair algae is caused by a lack of N. Is this a planted tank? If so, make sure your CO2 is in check. Do a big WC, then add ferts. If it isn't planted, maybe do a filter cleaning and WC. Adding algae eating fish will treat the symptom, but won't address the cause. My 2¢
