  1. I heard Concept Aquariums went out of business (actually I know they did) and they are now buying tanks from Bow Valley Aquariums Bow Valley also supplies all the tanks to Riverfront Aquariums as well.
  2. What's everyone else selling at the auction? Looks like i'll have some Discus and other interesting items.
  3. go with the sump....best bank for you buck and easiest to maintain.

  5. As for stock... I suggest keeping and selling items and live stock that sell quickly and give a good turn over and resonable prices. There is no sense in stocking a store full of exotic and expensive items that dont sell or stay in stock for longer periods of time. In order to sustain a long running business, you need to sell stock and move inventory. I like using Gold Aquariums as an example. Dennis use to be a hobbist just like most of us, breeding and selling him own stock. he was able to maintain excellent quality and reasonable prices with little overhead. He use to have a similar philosphy with his store in the early years till they became established. I recommed only bring in exotic fish and inventory on a pre-order/pre-paid basis. the care, attention and feeding required for sure animals kills the bottom line. The key to running a successful aquatic store (in my opinion) is outstanding quality of goods and services, reasonable prices and frugal operating and marketing that give you the most bang for your buck. Watch your overhead and keep clean healthy, Disease free tanks. Also, be knowedgeable about what you are selling and I use the rule that if I personally would not buy something of that quality and price for myself, then why would others. If the deal you structure makes good business sense, then it may just work out. I have learned a lot about this business in my short time working for a business on the wholesale side of things. PM me if you have any questions.
  6. if the store is currently shut down, I would recommend a strict "asset" purchase. the good will went with the store when it closed. Also, an asset purchase will help you avoid dealing with any thing negative that may be on the books or for that matter may NOT be on the books. Also, when doing an asset purchase, make sure you know what the wholesale cost of the assets in question are and see what they have been depretiated down to. You never want to over pay for a used and depreciated asset. the rule of thumb for a "bankrupt" business is $0.10-$0.20 on the dollar of asset. Make sure the lease agreement is suitable for your needs (term, price, conditions) Lots to think about, you may need to him to a Timmies rather then taking a timmies to him...LOL PM me if you need to know what wholesale prices are on tanks and equipment (I work for Bow Valley Aquariums) Cheers adn good luck
  7. Pursuant to the rule change, http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=25418, any thoughts on having an online auction similar to the "CLF Auction" except all proceeds go help support this forum? This may be a way for members to give back for using the forum for free for so long. I'm sure just about every member can afford to sacrifice one item to help support the forum. Any thoughts?

  9. http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/ctl366...eshrimphatchery This the one I use and its worked great. the hatchrate may also depend on the quality of eggs you are using.
  10. always go for the larger tank IMO. In a 20 gallon i'd start with 6 multis and soon enough, there will be more then you know what to do with. for a 20 gallon tank, i'd stick to a species only tank, if you go to a 33 gallon, then you can add in some dwarf cyps. HTH
  11. I go with a very general rull of thumb: Buy as big as you can afford and have room for. In end, you know you "should" have gotten a larger tank....lol
  12. from the pics, the female looks egg bound. Try some metro or clout, it'll help flush out any internal parasites. I'd put the sick fish into quarantine so not to medicate non-sick fish
  13. the Eruption Leopards from Jeffrey Yang are by far my favorites. I was shocked when I saw the sizw if the the fish from this past order. The Eruption Leopards for example were bought at 4". they arrived and were 5.5"! Cant beat the price either.

  16. what kind of substrate are you using? test the ph of the water coming out of tap. If it continues, a good safe way to lower PH is by using peat (peat pellets).

  19. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/calgaryaquariums/ There is someone on the CAS newsgroup selling 30 or so cories. His direct e-mail address is: simonwong7@shaw.ca Here is the ad: Moving Sale! I'd like to get rid of most of my equipment. All have had water in them in the last couple of weeks (ie. they don't leak). You'll need to bring a friend along to move them out of my basement though. They are a little dirty, but nothing a little vinegar (or CLR) wouldn't take off. Coralife VHO 4-Lamp Ballast (Never been used): $250 Bought it a few years ago, and never got around to using it. Comes with a couple of VHO 4ft tubes as well (new as well) http://www.aquatichouse.com/lights_files/vhoballast.asp Tank 1: $80 60" x 24" x 15" (about 100 gallons). Bulkheads are included. http://www.head-west.ca/forsale/110gallon.jpg Tank 2: $150 72" x 24" x 24" (180 gallons) This tank is not plumbed. http://www.head-west.ca/forsale/180gallon.jpg Tank 3: $80 66" x 17" x 18" (90 gallons) This tank is plumbed and has an overflow on the side. http://www.head-west.ca/forsale/90gallon.jpg Tank 4: $50 36" x 18" x 23" (65 gallons) This tank is plumbed on the side (no overflow) http://www.head-west.ca/forsale/65gallon.jpg Tank 5,6,7,8,9 : $20 (each) Standard 33 gallon tanks plumbed in the corner http://www.head-west.ca/forsale/33gallon.jpg The Pump (Model 80) : $250 78 lpm. Have approx 30 of them. $2 each As well, I have 1 discus to give away. It's the last of the ones I was breeding, so I need it to go to a good home. It's been raised in ph lowered water all its life (although not softened water). Ph is approx 5.5 - 6. I will not give away to anyone who has never taken care of discus. Various other stuff (ie. pumps, filters, heaters, pond filters, uv sterilizers, lighting etc). Contact me if you're looking for something.. I'm pretty sure I have it I also have various fancy goldfish. (ie. ranchu/lionhead, fantail, jikins, tosakins, shubinkins). They're currently sitting in a tub on my deck. heater help

Dustin, I have 500 Watts heating my 200 gallon tank. I highly recommend getting a 300 +Watt Won Pro Heat titanium heater (or 2) They have a remote on the outside that use to set the temp. I find them to VERY accurate,
  21. ideally, you want your sump to be at least 1/3 the size of your tank. It is possible to get away with a sighhtly smaller sump. I have a 200 gal tank being filtereed by a 30 gal sump.....I do find that it is too small as I get micro bubbles in tank. a 70 gal sump may be too small Especially if your power turns off. i'd go with a 150 gal sump for safety.
