I just finished my filter for my 1000 gal. I made it from an 80 liter tote box and like you said I use the universal spun plastic furnace filter for part of the media. I also have a compartment with lava rock in it. I separate the compartments with egg crate. I don't think it would matter how big the tank is, the male, once he sees the females, would beat them like they were rented mules. Betta breeding is normally done under close supervision, when both the male and the female want to get "some," with the female being removed when necessary for her survival.

I can shed some light on this, as another one of my "experiments," I placed four juvey labs in my community tank with guppys, barbs, tetras, pencilfish, loaches, catfish, and plecos in a very heavily planted 55 gal. tank. 2 of the 4 mated and spit 7 kiddees, 4 of which I gave to Ryan for free. They are originally from Dwayne's stock (punmans) about 5 generations since. They put up a hell of a fight, trying not to get caught, and I suspect after spending nearly 24 hours in a bag, from what I hear was with WCs until they could be picked up, I would be a tad rattled myself. They look to be in a "normal," African enviroment now with rocks and no plants with Demasonis which are skittish fish at the best of time. I guess what I am saying is that these fish have to get used to you and their new tank, in other words "don't sweat it," and unless you have got a scary butt ugly face, they will learn to like you. :smokey: BTW Dwayne they are at least an inch long.

I assume you are trying to maintain a temp of 84 F (29 C) That of course is fairly high in the operating range of most heaters. I am using 2 x 200 watt heaters for a 90 gal. Discus. They are on probably 80 percent of the time and I would rather have that than a huge heater that would cook the fish if it stuck on. In your case I would use multiple heaters only maybe replace the 2 x 100 watts with a 200.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Karen I was doing some reading about brittle stars and mass breeding. Read this article http://www.wetwebmedia.com/brittlestarreprofaqs.htm he indicates he made some changes by adding a powerhead and his stars went crazy. Some other stuff I read says that stars can start spawning due to temp. increase (Could your heater have stuck on for a while during the night?) or physical (water current changes). No where did I find info to indicate that this brittle star release was toxic to other life. I hope you find an answer.

I know what you are saying Nick it is like automotive glass for the side windows. Funny you always find the tag that says " "Tempered Glass do not drill," stuck to the bottom glass of the tank. Would you just replace the glass in this case or repair?

Sorry to hear Mathew, I just went through the same with a 29 after holding water for a week. If it were mine, I would try to figure out a way to solidly support the glass under the crack, because putting water in the tank will bow the glass and make the crack bigger. Normally to keep a crack from spreading you would drill a small hole on each end of the crack, unfortunately not so easy with tempered. Then I would get a piece of 1/4 inch acrylic cut to the shape of the entire bottom and silcone it over top of the original glass. That or find someone to recut the botttom glass and put in in for you. As was said not a good thing to happen.

I put the heater and filters on a separate power bar so I just turn it off for WCs and leave lights air etc. on.

Here is an example. Gone but not forgotten..... Mr Poopee the pleco. :cry: Oh how I miss you Mr Poopee, How you used to stick to the glass with the little hangee thing in your mouth moving to show that yes, you were still alive. I always admired the way you could convert algae and NLS wafers into the strongest, longest lasting, impeller clogging, lengths of poop I had ever seen. Actually, my boy when he was 2, had poops so big that I figured his bum took a half hour to close... I mean I wish I caught trout with that length and girth... anyway, back to Mr. Poopee. And Mr Poopee was artistic with his feces, he would swim from plant to plant draping his brown garland of poo, sometimes creating intricate designs that would snag younger fish like a spider's web. One time I swear my tank looked a sailing ship, except with no sails, but all the rigging. Then one day the little hangee thing in Mr.Poopee's mouth stopped wriggling, the last 6 inches of poop hanging from his butt softly swaying in the current, I knew Mr. P was dead. But even in death he was still a fighter, I opted for the usual burial at sea, and setting him forth from the upstairs bathroom, where I figured inertia would carry him out to the street sewer, plopped him in the bowel, saluted as was customary, and pushed the handle. Well the little bastard spun and twisted and refused to go quietly, he floated to the top with what appeared to be a grin on his face. Then I introduced him to Mr. Plunger. :cry: :cry: Oh how I miss you Mr. Poopee :cry: :cry:

I heard when they built the houses in Dover they put in one joist every 4-5 feet. They figured the only extra water container a Dover home owner would have over and above the tub, the toilet, and the sink would be a 3 ring blow up kiddie pool in the backyard. They also figured that if it fell through the floor it belonged in the basement anyway. JK BTW nice tank.

That is eactly the reason I feed 3 mm to my discus, they are never in a hurry to get to the food while it sinks and 1 mm is too small for them to pick out of the gravel.

Oh I know, no plans for posting in the buy and sell just yet. More happy with the fact that I have an enviroment suitable for them to at least give it a try.

My little girl is determined to be a mama, second clutch in 2 weeks. I figure if they are still there tomorrow, good chance of babies.

I know NUKE IT!!!!! :ph43r: JK If this is a planted tank reduce the nutrients, if not planted you could cover the tank for a couple of day so no light gets in. It won't hurt the fish. The american flag fish and the ameca splendids will eat hair algae when you don't feed them too much fish food. As far as an SAE what is the problem??? I think you are thinking about the Chinese algae eater which can become PITAs when bigger.
