  1. The more surface area the better, if used as substrate the stuff on the bottom were no water circulates doesn't help. I used to put some in the toe of a Nylon stocking and then in a filter. I had aragonite in my shelldweller tank and it was a consistant 8.4. My sand was constantly being turned though, my Multies were bulldozers in disguise...
  2. They work well in canisters and HOBs. If they ever get dirty, just throw them in the washing machine. Every Canadian Dollar store I have seen always seems to carry them if you don't feel like washing them.
  3. Considering the mouse we found him eating two days ago, I would rather him eat high quality fish food. Besides, have you ever read the cat food ingredients? It is just brine shrimp pellets, I can't see any harm from it. Though I do agree it is an awfully expensive cat treat, and thus it is now sitting out of reach of the cats.
  4. I kept wondering how I was going through so much fish food. Not the flakes really, but mostly the expensive brine shrimp pellets (I call it fish caviar... just as pricey) and the bigger pellets meant for my marine fish. There are three bowls of different food in the house because our two cats are so fussy, so it's not like he is starving... Note to self - close jars and keep any container out of reach of kitty (the other one is a master of opening (well, ripping open) any plastic jars, plastic baggies, or anything else he chooses to.
  5. :welcome: to AA. What fish do you have?
  6. I was handling frozen bloodworms and about 10 minutes afterwards I was sneezing like crazy, with running nose, and slightly watery eyes. I only just connected the sneezing fits and bloodworms, as I was trying to add up the similarities of previous experiences. It took two days for my nose to stop running and then become uncongested - even with extra strength allergy pills! Thank goodness, the dried bloodworms do not seem to bother me. I will be tossing the frozen bloodworms out... Although as far as I know I have no allergies... Anyone else have this problem?
  7. I haven't found them, but that may be because I have a Rena xp3 and it would be too much for young fry. I had my weather loaches swim up the outflow into my old Aquaclear 110 though...
  8. I noticed a couple of people from www.canreef.com might bring some stuff. But it is mostly freshwater related - fish, equipment, plants, etc.
  9. I have mine on a nice dresser stand. Just ensure it is sturdy enough to hold the weight.
  10. Trim the bigger leaves, but leave the small ones that are about 1" long - they are there to detect the sunlgiht when spring arrives. I actaully wrap mine in 7-8 sheets of newspaper, dampen the newspaper, and wrap in several small grocery bags and put that into one big garbage bag. They only need to be damp to survive. I overwintered all of mine this way with no problems. Just need to check it every couple months to ensure it is damp - the paper dries out first. Best of luck!
  11. I currently use one of those collapsible kiddie pools, the bottom is blue - at least at first, but it soon accumulates debris and it stands out quite well... For my permanent pond I plan to use one of those UFA water troughs - it may be blue, but a small layer of gravel will cure that. Main reason I am choosing the UFA tub is that it will outlive a flexible liner and is built for a bit of abuse.
  12. I didn't solve my MTS that way. I seem to like a variety of fish that are better off in separate tanks. Most of my favorite fish need different water parameters and wouldn't get along anyway. Saltwater, goldfish, and small cichlids just don't get along! You always seem to need just one more fry/quarantine tank!
  13. From what I have heard, Deltec MCE600 are very reliable and good. If I didn't have a sump, I would have bought one. I would check out peoples' thoughts on reefcentral.com in the equipment section. Generally in the bigger tanks, like above 55g, people prefer a sump skimmer.
  14. My mom detests the scent of hatching brine shrimp, so that is out for me. Never had angelfish, but for my fry (mostly livebearers) I used vinegar eels and microworms, upgrading to frozen and various dry foods I crushed with the pestle. But now I have to go google on how to decapsulate Brine Shrimp Eggs... Though I am not sure bleach and fish food should be used in the same sentence...
  15. I often leave my old microworm cultures outside just so I can collect extra free food. I don't even need to second guess feeding to fish, because I know what they have been eating.
  16. Lol. I was laughing too hard! I wouldn't have been able to hold it steady enough anyway. I really need to get my cousin to return my camera!
  17. I usually soak food in Garlic extract couple times a week just as preventative/treat. This time I had some liquid left over from my other tanks, so I soaked some goldfish pellets in it and dumped it in the goldfish tank. LOL. Goldfish are always hungry, but it resembled, as close as I can describe it, a shark feeding frenzy converted into a dance. Never seen normally placid goldfish have such a feeding frenzy, and the dojo loaches kept trying to steal food - no mean feat for loaches to shove their way through goldfish bodies to raid pellets floating 22" above their heads! Definitely worth the laugh! -roll-
  18. And here we just brought in a backhoe and removed two loads of large rocks to build our garage... I swear our house is built on a rock quarry... Too bad you weren't closer, we (and probably most of our neighbors) would have given you more rocks than you can handle.
  19. I am starting salt, but I am north of Edmonton. I seem to remember that there were one or two members on Canreef that were from leduc...
  20. The shubunkins and possibly the Hibuna (no experience with hibuna in the pond) should do fine (with a heater in winter), but the fancier goldfish (fantails of all sorts, etc) seem to need warmer waters than their relatives. The temperature swings seem to be very hard on them and cause issues with the swim bladder. My mom bought me an oranda, but it has to remain inside as it kept having swim bladder problems (which disappeared every time I took it inside) even though the pond ranges from 22 midday to 17 at night - it is against the house so the temp doesn't fluctuate as much as one in the ground might. Might want to research golden orfe, they are supposed to do fantastic in ponds in the "great frozen north". As for pond depth, I have a friend in Edmonton with an 18" deep pond, who overwintered fish - but I don't even want to know his electricity bill... A tank or kids pool in the basement seems to work well if you have the room.
  21. I agree with JORG about the apistos and rams, though my Neolamprologus Multifasciatus seem to prefer a bit of salt - then again, they do prefer harder water.
  22. Paradise Pets in St. Albert had a vampire a few weeks ago when I was there, not sure if it is still there or not.
  23. ok... got them on photobucket but am I able to attach them to this post ? Once they are on photobucket, there will be links below the pictures (direct link, image link, etc) CHoose either direct or image link and copy the www. info. simply paste that into the compose box where you usually type (eg when replying).

    RO/Di unit

I actually found one on www.bulkreefsupply.com. They charge 15% for shipping and duty, so no surprise charges. I got one that hooks up to the sink so I can just store it in my closet when not in use. Also ordered 20lbs of the "BRS reefsaver eco rocks" to see how they looked. If they are nice I may have to order more when I get my 90g (decided to upgrade before I got the tank instead of after it is setup ).
  25. I think those bubbles are too fine for a bubble-disk... Could it be several of the wooden airstones used together?
