  1. With the long water change intervals, the added water could have an effect but it may all just be coincidence as long as you added the appropriate amount of treatment for the greater amount of water. Algae is likely popping up now due to the longer days which provides more light. You have a few ways to deal with it, but the bigger issue is the dying critters. What are the numbers from the tests? Is the tank temp constant through the day, or is it getting warmer in the sun?
  2. I'm not searching Ebay for balls. Sounds like a fun think to try in the tank, but I'll avoid asking about getting a pair. Looks like from searching they can get out of control, but that should be managable if I do any trimming in a bucket.
  3. In-line heaters seem to be popular in that case so you don't have to wory about contact with the heater, since you do not have a sump.
  4. I'm sure there will be aquarium salt on hand and we can raise the the temapture to help cure ick. The S.O. has me on a strick no touch/no feed policy. I am like a pigeon, feed me and I just hang around making a mess being a pest.
  5. The upcoming fishclub auctions will likely have low cost fish approved plants if you can go.
  6. I think if you look through the buy/sell archives you will see this has been happening. I suspect the stumbling block here is that the item should have an implied value, be that a dollar amount or a desired trade item. With that in mind I do not see the need for another forum for trade only items as that can be specified in the current buy/sell forum. To add to your philosophical comments, you will also find it a great way to meet up in person with people you have something in common with!
  7. The tanks are the same price as last year when I bought at Boxing day! Still trying to assess how the crack effects the tank, and what the solution will be.
  8. I am still working on a picture. I would describe it almost as a chip, on the outside of the glass,
  9. Pisces often has several great boxing day deals.
  10. Yep. There is a reason the lectures about flat level surfaces get made. Not sure what the other option for cause would be....
  11. Looks like I have waited too long. I found a crack in my tank today. In the front left corner poking just above the trim I can see at least a 1cm x 1cm x 1mm chip in the front piece of glass. The chip has not sepeated, but you can see it (thankfully) under the caulking. So now I have no idea what I am going to do.
  12. It looks like we will be getting a new stand at a Boxing Day sale, and I want to make sure my process makes sense. Figured while I was swapping things out I will replace the gravel. Assemble new stand. Rinse 2 new Rubbermaid containers. Fill containers with water and treat with prime. Move filters and heaters to Rubbermaid containers. Move fish and some gravel to Rubbermaid (to get hiding babies). Guard Rubbermaid containers from cats (S.O. says no using cats as Endler population control). Drain and empty tank. Clean up tank, remove hard water stains(not sure how yet) Move tank to new stand. Move into position and level (going to use two DRIcore panels and a levelling kit. Add rinsed/cleaned decor. Fill with water and treat with prime. Move fish and filters back. Does it sound like I am missing anything? Old stand is big flat top, new stand will be edge support. Do I need to worry about stress from new areas of support?
  13. The fish bags he bought the corals in must have had greater volume.
  14. No more saying you have no room for a reef tank. Water Bonzai?
  15. We have a fitted glass top, pulled out all the decore, dug in the gravel, and never did find out what happed to thee of our corries one day. And in our tank there is nothing that could eat them. I can see loosing fish becoming easier in a salt tank. Hope with allthe hiding spots your fish is well and in there hiding somewhere.
  16. Unlike the cub tank thingie I could not get excited about I can honestly say this has a few features I have been interested in. Given how well that high priced cub has sold I could see this having good sales potential, but we will need to see once more people get hands on.
  17. fishclubgirl could give you guidance on raising fry in the toilet? Do you add the prime to the tank or the bowl?
  18. Keep in mind rating numbers are max, and you can usualy reduce flow. My filters are rated up to a max 250 Gallon, and my tank is 90 Gallons.
  19. At the end of the day if or how badly any of this could/would effect fish seems subjective at best. I view this more in the going the extra mile to make fish abit more healthy.
  20. This seems kind of frustrating. I cannot find a link to Bill Nye’s comments, nor can I find authoritative information on issues surrounding PVC pipes and hoses. Sources I would consider non authoritative seem to comment on all forms of PVC plastics being linked with lead, Bisphenol-A (BPA), Phthalates, and other various compounds. It would seem most kids pools are made from materials on the suspected lead based materials lists, so the recommendation seems odd but harmless. I do recall several older CBC Marketplace series on lead in water that referenced the Health Canada recommendation to run water for 3-5 minutes to flush lead and other contaminants that could leach into water lines that had not been used for several hours. In this link http://www.cbc.ca/marketplace/pre-2007/fil...ater/index.html that recommendation is again referenced by Health Canada's Dave Green. Given the broad use of products in the fish industry it’s hard to gauge how big a deal this is. It sounds like as long as you are wasting a bit of water first, which I am in spades, the risk is low.
  21. I have been quite happy with the media bag I have over the Rena heater I use as on of the pickups. The other pickup has a spong over it that is cut the the foam is about 1 cm deep. So far no fry and decent flow.
  22. Petsmart may have a few options.
  23. I think truth is with that much un-occupied water she could not resist having fish in it.... Nice to here a fish starting life there rather than ending it.
