  1. Another great resource for catfish lovers is: http://www.planetcatfish.com/
  2. Looks like a male hiding out as a female for sure. The stride pattern and adam's apple are also possible giveaways
  3. He sure doesn't seem to mind having his "nuchal hump" rubbed.
  4. I haven't looked at the stock list for Canadian Aquatics in Vancouver. Spencer hasn't had anything I'm interested in lately. Harold, thanks very much for the detailed information on ordering from the US. If I go this route, I will definitely do my homework in advance. It sounds a little daunting to say the least. David.
  5. I'd prefer to go with juvies, but if the price was right I'd consider adults. I'd be very interested to find any local breeders. Thanks.
  6. Hi there, I have just finished set and cycling my 5' 120 gallon tank and I want to stock it with some Frontosa. Not just any frontosa, I want to get one of the Zaire species. (Kapampa, Moba or Kitumba) I'm having a tough time finding any of these locally and am considering ordering some from the US. Has anybody here done this before? I am considering ordering from TNT cichlids or Mosta Frontosa. They seem to have had a few good reviews from the on-line frontosa community. Any recommendations or experiences would be appreciated. What are the hidden costs I should be aware of? I would appreciate any insights before I fork out some big money.
  7. I'm sorry to hear about your losses Harold. It's a damn shame. I switched to Prime a couple of years ago for this very reason. I figure Calgary may start using chloramine one day and I suspect they aren't going to make a point of telling the fishkeeping population.
  8. There are quite a few cichlids from Lake Tanganyika listed here: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/
  9. The formula end up being 1 part Eco complete and 2 parts Sil-7. I love the way it looks not. Not or now? I like the African cichlid mixes.
  10. Yes they have samples in their office in glass jars that you can look at. The sil 9 is the largest grain size and it is variable probably from 1-3 mm? The sil 8 is more uniform in size and cheaper. I cheaped out and bought the sil 8.
  11. Target play sand is great but not being able to get it at Home Depot any longer, I tried Consolidated Compressor in Calgary and was very pleased with the sand. It cost ~$9 for a 40 kg bag for the Sil 8. They also have a Sil 9 which I'm wishing I had bought now. It is an even larger grain and more irregular in size. It was ~$22 for a 40 kg bag. Very clean and easy to rinse. http://www.profilecanada.com/companydetail...ssor_Calgary_AB
  12. I think it could be this one: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1733 The one above it looks like a male Pseudotropheus saulosi: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1
  13. Thanks for the quick response Val. I think I will give it a try on my new 120 gallon. I will add some used filter substrate and see how it goes.
  14. How long should it take to do complete a fishless cycle?
  15. Very nice tanks love the decor. What type of frontosas are those?
  16. How deep is your substrate and did you vacuum during your w/c?
  17. It's not going to hurt to give them a call first. That way you know whether or not they can accomodate your fish and it may save your fish some unnecessary stress.
  18. I recently bought an FX-5 in Calgary. I think I paid $340 for it at Elite Aquatics. Riverfront also sells them when they're in stock. They were going for $420 less 25% which would have worked out to about $320.
  19. That's awesome. I'm happy for you.
  20. No I don't think it is. The coloration does not look right. Common pleco is more brown. If it was caught in Nicaragua, then it is definitely not. Hypostomus punctatus are found in the Rio Janiero rivers of southern Brazil. http://www.planetcatfish.com/cotm/cotm.php?article_id=64
  21. I'd be interested to hear how quickly these fish grow. That's certainly a high protein diet.
  22. That's a beautiful collecton of plecos you have there. I especially like the leopard and the sunshine. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.
  23. Just curious why you don't use any substrate for the bottom of your tanks. Does this make maintenance easier?
