  1. That's awesome. I'm never seen the ammania bonsai before. Make sure you post some FTS as well.
  2. You can try an anti-fungal drop (methanylene blue or acriflavine). I would also use a larger tank. Those frozen foods can pollute quite quickly. Or are you doing a 10% water change right after a feeding?
  3. I agree, one million percent! That is why I hang out here too. Ohhh....do I ever regret that decision...... -roll-
  4. Looks like roots to me. I find that happening often on other cryptas too. I can't tell with the ones to the left. New c. balanse plants will have the crowns develop similar to the one in the middle.
  5. The reflector makes the most difference, then the power consumption. T5 uses better reflectors unless you buy a T8 unit with similar reflectors. The T5's use less energy than the T8's if you are comparing natural output (NO) to itself. They also produce less heat. I would go with the T5 if you are looking for a slimer and lighter alternative. However, if the costs are much higher, go with T8. You will have more money in your pocket for other goods.
  6. Welcome to the site. Those discus images look amazing. It's great that you are in Calgary too.
  7. This was so funny. Guess what I'm eating this weekend. KFC....
  8. Are there a lot of leaves on your swords and vals? try pruning some of them off if there are. Pruning promotes more leaves to grow. You can also add some root tablets around the substrate if its regular sand or gravel.
  9. I would also check to make sure that the intake holes are all connected tightly. Sometimes the top most connector that joins with the h at the top lets air in when you are draining the water level below that connection. Good tip about the plug. I didn't know that.
  10. I agree. I had pretty good growth on my 90 gallon (24" tall) on those lights as well. If you buy the daylights that are not boxed up, they are only $3 each. If you can pick up a T5 fixture, even better. A 3 x T5 fixture will leave you satisfied in the long run. Although the costs are higher to start. Give your local electrical wholesaler a call. I'm sure you can get a T5 fixture with bulbs for only $80 - $90 (double strip in the same design as those shop lights that is).
  11. I find that if you rip it off little by little while under water, its easier. If you search for a video on youtube by tropica, you can see Oliver Knott removing plants from pots and rock wool. You must be happy that is done now though right? Easier than planting HC!
  12. I would only add white grease to the quick disconnect valves but not to the rings itself. That is how it comes from the manufacture. I think it is only to help with the disconnect latch though. When I clean my filter and notice air in the top 1.5" of the canister, this is what I do. 1. Turn the unit off. 2. Lift the quick disconnect. 3. Take the lid off the intake tube and fill it with water until it is to the top of the T intersection. 4. Replace the lid and drop the quick disconnect back in place. 5. Make sure the water level in the tank is right. 6. Turn the unit back on. I'm sure you have tried this before though. I'm also sure that you need to reseat the quick disconnect properly. Maybe check the input and output hoses to make sure they have free range and aren't twisted in a weird angle that prevents air bubbles from getting out.
