  1. Oh yes, the world is all good and rosy! Lots of everything for everyone! How much food is left in the natural world? We are reduced to scrapping our plate. Sad to see that this guy is being forced into extinction as a useless bycatch.
  2. Meaning http://www.nd.edu/~archives/latin.htm betta bene : well (melior : better / optime : best ) bonus : good (melior : better / optimus : best ). Pronounced http://www.merriam-w...?betta001=betta
  3. Maybe botox isn't the correct word. Maybe a growth hormone is injected. The hump looks similar to Steatocranus sasuarius.
  4. I just heard from a good source that the crainial hump on the flowerhorn is exagerated by botox injections. Appearently it's a crossbred, botox injected, over priced piece of... If this is true... I just don't know what to say... I don't think myself and my family would be safe! Has anyone heard anything about this?
  5. Searching, I've yet to find the answer I'm looking for. I think I am going to have to find a book of nomencature that describes the etymology of the word, Betta. However, as much as I don't want to, I do believe I have debunked the two meanings of the word given above- warrior and a dialect word of Thailand. The dialect word ikan bettah seemed like a possiblity to me when I first read it, but it wasn't what I wanted to hear. Aswell, I remember reading a few years ago about the warrior tribe called the bettah meaning and I wanted this to be true as the idea of a "splendid warrior" is very romantic. Unfortunately, today I've descovered that both these descriptions are unlikey to be true and here is how I came to that conclusion. First thing I did was crack my trusty Baensch Atlas Vol 1 and flipped to page 632. Betta splendens (Regan, 1910) Siamese Fighting Fish Hab.: Thailand; Cambodia; possibly Laos. Soc. Behaviour: Males cannot be kept together. They will attack and tear each other's fins. Just this information alone would lead us to believe that both descriptions of the word Betta could be correct, but the problem with those meaning lies with the author of the name Betta splendens. Regan described the fish in 1910! http://www.fishbase....sname=splendens So, what does that have to do with anything? Lots! Regan was not the first to allocate the word Betta as a genus. The origional author to use Betta to describe a genus was french zoologist, Achilles Valenciennes and he used it in 1846 to describe Betta picta; synonym Betta trifaciata from Java. http://www.repositor...document/149052 Would not this fish then be called the Javanese Fighting Fish? No, and for two reasons. Betta is likely not derived from an Asian dialect or word, which is almost obvious now. Infact, the word Siamese is an English word and only used in Canada, the US and the UK when refering to Betta splendens as a common name. http://www.fishbase....&StockCode=4992 Interestingly enough, it appears to first be introduced into Alberta in 1971. http://www.fishbase.org/Introductions/IntroductionsList.cfm?ID=4768&GenusName=Betta&SpeciesName=splendens&fc=429&StockCode=4992 Nor is the word Betta derived from the name of a tribal warrior people, which I'll attempt to explain why. Betta picta, the first Betta ever described (1846) http://www.fishbase....eciesname=picta turns out to be very different in disposition to Betta splendens. I found this out by cracking my trusty Baensch Atlas Vol. 2 and on page 798. Betta picta (Valenciennes, 1846) Painted Betta Hab. Indonesia; the islands of Java. Soc. Behaviour: Peaceful species which can be kept in a well planted community tank. Now if that is the social behaviour of the first ever descibed Betta species then I have a hard time believing that Betta means warrior.
  6. What? Read that and I don't trust the author or their sources. Read everything in that link and you'll see what I mean, I think.
  7. You two betta smartin' up and give me what I need here, please!
  8. Velvet swords have and amazing look as adults, they look just like the material of red velvet.
  9. Can anyone tell me what the word means? Will
  10. I think he should remove the Asian religious ceramics and fill the shelves with stuff that will help pay the rent, like quality aquarium products. Idk it's just a thought, it being a fish store and all. And if you got koi plastered all over the front windows, you should atleast offer them. Haven't seen a sick fish in there in over three years.
  11. Last time I was in there I figured it would be the last time i'd be in there, except maybe to offer him some money to buy off all his tanks.
  12. yes, it is in Calgary around 36st and marborough way NE i think. He is not the original owner, and whoever built it, built it to compete with Golds. There is probably about 50 - 75 tanks. It's a LFS and everyone of those is worth checking out atleast 3 times a year even if you don't like 'em.
  13. It sure would look pretty in my 180g public display electric eel tank.
  14. It is hard to tell, but swords that size require so much more ferts than most other plants. Those two swords are not even half the size they can get and I don't think you are feeding enough to really support their growth or to really bring out their potential in leaf colour and vibrancy.
  15. I think those plants and that tank looks awesome!!
  16. It's jist that it looks like it is in need of some fertilizer- potassium and iron maybe.
  17. The key with these little bowls is water change and proper feeding. Adding the plants such as they did will help to filter the water of any trace amounts of ammonia. Changing the majority of the water once a week will also keep organic waste down to almost nothing. Feeding only what the fish will eat in a 2-3 minute time span will also keep the water quality in good condition until it's time for the next water change. Uneaten food left in the water is a disaster waiting to happen. I have two males on either side of my monitor in 8x8x8 cubes (2.2g) with peace lilies around the edges and a hidy hole. My one male has been in there for 2 years with out a single problem and he right now has a 1 cm thick bubble nest. If someone wants to try this plant bowl concept for bettas and paradise fish I can tell you it works and I say go for it! If you want to go larger than 1 gallon then that's great, but a one gallon works too and without any problems. Also keep in mind that a betta in a one gallon bowl is in more water per length and weight of fish than most of the silver arrowanas, tiger shovelnoses, id sharks and redtail cats and many many more. Yet bettas do not develop the symptoms from cramped quarters like those other fish do and they are in usually well filtered tanks! I just recently purchased 11 female bettas and they were all raised in little glass jars (everyones bettas were raised in jars) and these 11 bettas are just as healthy if not healthier than most fish i've seen in private filtered tanks and stores.
  18. An most importantly she does it all as your wife! The Buddha said: "Women are the gods."
  19. "if you can read this at 1 metre per hour you are trailing too close"
  20. Ahahahaha... I think your sword is hungry!
  21. thanks again. remember down under! oh LDA 33 for 12 please.

  22. I successfully bred a pair here in Calgary about 9 years ago. I used a 10g tank 3/4 full of conditioned tap water, the temp was 80 degress and I filtered it wit a tetra brilliant. The top of the tank was cover with selaphane wrap and the only light was ambiant room. The female I kept in a bowl beside his tank and I conditioned her with hikari frozen blood worms and SFB frozen brine. They spawned right away. There was one plant to hide the brilliant and the nest was built at the opposite end of the filter. The bottom of the tank had less than a cm of sil 7 sand. He was in that tank for a good month before I started showing him a females. I parked the origional female you gave me beside my Yin, she is still in the container you brought her in and he is going crazy building. I'm going to remove her in a few days and put her in front on my crown tail and see if he gets all bothered. When i see she has eggs swelling in her I'm going to park her in front of Yin again and see if he starts building again, if he does I'll wrap the top of his tankl with selephane and see if I can get them to have a sexy party.
