  1. I find they prefer to move the gravel or sand and leave a clean bottom area for the newly hatched fry. Our Julies and Brichardi do the same thing. Once the fry are free swimming the parents almost herd them into this area and remove any debri ( old food, feces, plant matter). I call it the nursery.

  4. It is a very sensitive subject. In nature there is some hybridization but on the whole most species only propagate with their own. Mother nature allows only the strong ones to survive. In the wild when hybridization occurs, it is more of a fluke, and usually does not fit in the balance of that ecosystem and generally dies off. When people play with it to create a new species, we are playing at being God, and need to step lightly and think about what we are doing. If we are hybridizing fish for example, we need to think about the consequenses. Are these fish going to be able to survive a healthy life, or will the species mixture create problems. They are after all a living creature..It is important that if they are given or sold to anyone, that they are made aware of the hybridization. Most important is that they are never introduced back into the wild, creating havoc with our ecosystem.
  5. Welcome Nicole :welcome:
  6. Definately sounds like they have paired up and haave little ones. They will attack any other fish in the tank that gets into their area. You will need to move the others or put up a barrier. Other than that survival of the swords will depend on them learning really fast where not to go.
  7. OOOOOOhhhhh my. What are you going to do with all the Dats when they get bigger? (18 inches ouch)
  8. We have some Julies that have decided to build some mountains and have moved enough that you can see the bottom glass of the tank. The sand was 3" deep.^^^^______^^^^^^
  9. Welcome Colby :welcome: Elite the new fish store on the weekly tour!!!
  10. It will get along well with the Africans, I had no problem with mine. A 90g is okay at that size but in the future, who knows. keep an eye on filtration, major poopers.
  11. I am paranoid about doing major cleaning on my tank, whenever I do, I seem to have a few extras showing up. I have a 1" electric yellow swimming around, and last week, I spotted some fry, who knows what they are, they disappeared before I could focus on them. I was planning on doing a major cleaning, and pulling the long nosed synos out for the auction, but if I do then the fry will be definate food.
  12. It is a sad day for fish hooiests but a good day for mother nature. Maybe the populations can get a jump and our great grandchildren will get to swim with them in the wild.

    Hello, and welcome :welcome:
  16. you will need extra air for sure. I have a 80 gallon with an xp3, the fish decided to move the bubble wand on me while I was out, when I came back ( within a couple of hours ) they were all at the top of the tank and gasping. It is now weighted down with a heavy rock.
  17. That is so cool, I will have to think about some ideas on how I could set that up
  18. We now have 4 generations, they now rule the tank
