TanisD
I have an o.b peacock with amazing pink colors marked dominant male when purchased, colors backed that up. It has about 8 egg spots and coloration of a male. I noticed the other day it is mouthbrooding is it possible that males do this or is it a guaranteed female now? Vallisneria
If its mouthbrooding its a female with male coloring. I had something similar happen when I kept Lab perlmutts. I had what I thought was a beautiful male. "He" was a perfect pearly white(females should have thick black barring) and definitely the dominant perlmutt in the tank. One day I found him holding so I removed him to another tank to check him out and I strip a bunch of fry. So he turned out to be a she, even though she had perfect male coloration and was the king of the tank.
firestorm
There are very few species where the males do the mouthbrooding, and peacocks are not one of them. You have one very colorful female Sometimes the dominant female can take on male colorations. Congrats, do you know who she bred with? jvision
This is an example of why venting is the only sure way to tell gender. You may still have a male who just decided to play mommy. Neither coloration nor holding are sure-fire ways of sexing mouthbrooding cichlids.
TanisD
Oh ok this is all very interesting information. Well I believe she bred with the more dominant o.b peacock just about as nice as the show o.b at big als so I am very excited to see the fry. African_Fever
She (he) may have been hormoned, or it just may be one of the perks of the OB's (that is the females having stunning coloration). Egg spots IMO are NEVER a reliable way to sex Malawians (whether hybrid or not).
bigfishal
Yes I have had many females with egg spots all the time. As well sometimes especially with OB malawi cichlids the females can even be more colorful then the males....
