ubr0ke
A member from another site has done extensive research with a par meter and developed a chart for those who have questions about lighting choices. For those of you who do not know what im talking about when i say par. Par stands for Photosynthetically Active Radiation. Basically it is the light thats usefull in photosynthesis. Anyways by using this chart you can match up tank heights with different fixture types to find exactly the light you are looking for. The results will be pretty surprising to a lot of you. All data was taken with reflectors that were typical of the fixture tested. Edited January 17, 2011 by ubr0ke

ubr0ke
If you know what par you are looking for you may be able to use this by doing some multiplication. This will give par ratings for different fixtures

ubr0ke
need a good update that includes leds ! Not going to happen any time soon. Too many variances between brand, watts, builds, etc. What about hardware store lights that are daylight or full spectrum? Full spectrum or daylight is color temp and makes little difference to par readings. Hardware store lights?, my guess would be t8's or t12's. You can use the chart originally posted. With t8's or t12's you can also use the watts per gallon rule.

SilverWolf
So is this saying that if I have a 12" high tank, with 1 T5NO bulb sitting on the tank that I can grow high light plants? Sorry, really really really new to this! Edited April 26, 2013 by SilverWolf
