Gambit
So, I'm about to acquire a 47 Gallon tank only thing is that it has no lid. Not a situation where there was a lid and it was lost but that tank came with no lid. I'm a little worried about fish jumping out. Does anyone see an issue with using Fiberglass Screen to create a cover that would prevent the fish from escaping the tank if they choose to jump? This would still allow me to have the "Open Concept" tank while ensuring that the fish stay where they belong, in the water. I'll post pics when I get the tank. Comments always welcome, Chris
zoopkamol
Have 8 tanks only 1 has a lid. Had tanks for 15+ years and only had 2 fish jump out. So depends on fish. Don't really see issue with fiberglass screen.. you could get glass cut too
jvision
AquaGiant makes glass lids for a decent price, but I have the same experience as zoopkamol - I've even kept open tops with known jumpers like hatchets, killis and a bunch of SW fish. I think the key is having an interior that suits the fishes' comfort - you know, make the inside more enticing than the outside
Psylant
Bow Valley Aquatics in SE Calgary will cut custom lids for you quite cheaply. He cut lids for my 180g and 90g. Warning: He'll usually only accept cash.
Gambit
Good to know about Bow Valley Aquariums, I'll have to check them out... I think I'll likely take my chances initially. I'm coming around to the idea of a open top tank. I guess only time will tell.
Psylant
I would like to try an open top tank someday, but I'm too scared. When I took my fish out of my 90g to dirt it, they lived in a very large Rubbermaid tub for about 4-5 hours. It had an airstone, AC110 hooked onto the side, tons of plants, etc. and I had 2 Siamese Algae Eaters jump out and a couple Rainbowfish too. Luckily I found them in time and they're fine, but I ended up putting saran wrap over the tub.

fishclubgirl
I love the look of open top tanks and have several. Amazed by what I find in the carpet crispies..bns, kribs, but I find it's mainly new fish or some sort of a battle over territory. Open top tanks are a great way to grow plants and also plants that grow out of the tank.. If the fish are depressed.. it happens..
creekbottom
I agree with this ^^. All of my tanks are open top and the only one I have a problem with is the one with a bossy cherry barb. He keeps chasing tankmates right out of the tank.
