ckmullin
Talk to a glass shop for end cuts. Might be free might be a nominal fee!
jvision
In Edmonton we have a place called Architectural Clearing House that sells glass sheets kept from windows. The glass is cheap! I tried looking for similar deals at the ReStore (Habitat for Humanity), but they were not as reasonable. But, what ckmullin says about deals to be had a glass shops could be the best way to go - you can't get a better deal than free!!
Iceturf
Call around to a few glass shops, I found one a few years ago that gave me custom cut safety glass for 6.50$/square foot. I've been to a few of those places that Jvision mentioned, in general I think its not worth the opportunity cost in your time in running around. Overboard
I have made a few lids. I go to Rally Glass in Edmonton. They cut the glass right to size to fit your needs. Very cheap. 5149-129 ave (780) 476-1978
