Say I love you with a fish ? Excuse me....

I was wondering why anyone would buy a fish ( I believe it was a parrot cichlid...might be wrong ) with the words " I HEART U" or I love you tattooed on the sides of the fish. What an awful job it would be to be the one who had to do that to a fish...Even more so, how awful for the fish.

These fish are for sale at a LFS (no names mentioned). I believe the ticket was $34.99 each. I would prefer the chocolates in the heart shaped box.

I myself have no problem mentioning the LFS in question, Big Als. I have absolutely no respect for a place that not only houses a dangerous blue ringed octopus on a counter in the open in a sub par enclosure, and is marketing abused fish (the I love you parrots) to make a quick buck. It's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. What was even worse was when some woman was like, "Ohhh my god, so cute!" when she saw them. I felt like knocking her out with some chloroform, and tattooing her face with "I have no respect for animals".

And after seeing that, I decided I will never purchase from Big Als, no matter the location.

Someone should give the SPCA a call. The stress from this mistreatment will likely be the end of these fish. I have never been to a Big Al's and I will never go there for any reason. This kind of "business" is just plain bad business. Somebody please call the SPCA.

EDIT: It is absolutely disgusting. I believe a boycot is in order. All our members should give some thought to a boycot. However, a boycot is meaningless unless the subject is aware. Therefore if someone has an e-mail address for Big A****** please post. I would then urge all of our members to fire off a "hot one" with the appropriate missive.

Rant complete!

Cheers;

I dont shop there because they will sell you anything even if it is deseased.

"Oh dont worry those white spots will go away, they are just stressed and new in the tank"

But I would email them to stop selling tattooed fish.

Nothing against tattoos (especially if you know me) but I consented!!

Has Ingrid Newkirk taught us nothing at all? C'mon guys, for all it's worth, stuff like this will continue to happen on a daily basis.

Best solution? Spread the word quietly. There is no point in making a big fuss about couple hundred of artificially enhanced fish when there are literally thousands being captive bred each day, and even more in the wild. If you really want to put things into perspective, think about if the persons responsible for this type of treatment would give a _____ about what you had to say.

Heil! Moogled out!

I like my children breaded and fried.

Come on Albert, beneath that altogether psycho fascade, a caring young, dare I say it "man" lurks beneath. With a few shock treatments, you too Albert, can contribute to society... bullshit who am I kidding we all love you the way you are. Ummmm when I say that I don't mean the messy, painful and altogether embarassing kind of love. wink wink. :unsure:

I have inserted a copy of the e-mail that I sent to the president of Big Al's;

Mr. Saul:

It has come to my attention that your Big Al's store in Calgary is selling what are thought to be parrot cichlids that have been tattooed with "I (heart) U" ostensibly as a Valentines promotion. I suspect that these fish were branded (either cold or hot) and not tattooed. I recall quite a number of years ago it was quite common for chicks to be coloured and sold as Easter novelties. The result was the death of most of these chicks as a result of maltreatment or the poisonous effect of the dye used to colour the chicks. This practice was finally legislatively terminated based on the actual cruelty to the animals. I believe that this is a classic example of crass commercialism, profit is king and what ever it takes, apparently including the mutilation of live animals, is acceptable. If you look in my signature you will see that I hold the C.A. designation so, profit is not a dirty word to me. However, in the case of Big Al's,the end justifies the means!!!!!!!!!!!!! This practice is abhorrent to me and I would suggest to all of the members of Alberta Aquatica. The idea of maltreatment of an animal solely to supposedly increase the salability of the animal is at best misguided. I would suggest to you sir, looking at an animal that has been so mutilated is highly unlikely to go very far towards persuading me to make a purchase. In fact, I would suggest that the effect is exactly opposite. In this regard sir, I advise you that I will never darken the door of a Big Al's store again. I also advise you that I will be passing this e-mail on to the membership of Alberta Aquatica for there review.

Sincerely;

Thanks for bringing this to all of our attention, as some of us that live in the far reaches of Calgary are not able to see the things that happen in all of the LFS. I wonder what the staff in that store think of having to net a fish like that and sell to a customer?

I'm so glad someone mentioned this.

I saw the "I heart you" fish at Big Al's not too long ago... I will never buy anything from them and absolutely agree with the previous posters - Big Al's is only after making a buck, and it doesn't seem like they care about the animals, or the customer.

EDIT: I also overheard one of these pieces of "advice" not too long ago - how to keep a saltwater puffer's teeth short - by clipping with nail clippers, or better, filing with a nail filer (much less stressful for the fish). This poor girl was completely buying into this as well...

I've got about 30 people now who previously shopped their, who will not be any longer. I'm on a mission!

30 people or so is probably peanuts to them, but whatever.

We (as a couple) are the type of customers pet stores want. When we go out (sometimes a few times a week) we spend money on our hobby. We are happy to spend it but we look for a few things:

1. Animal welfare: We will not spend money at a place which treats animals (in their care) poorly.

2. Price, selection and all the other stuff everyone else looks for

We were at Petcetera a few weeks back to find the horror of Bettas in tiny sealed bags (with a couple of tablespoons of water) laying around without anyone putting them in water. The others in the cups had extremely bad water quality. We left disgusted! Unfortunatley emotion got away and I should have documented the situation and reported it to animal control. The next time I see this I will be sure to report it.

Walmart in Marlborough has a bad habit of not removing dead fish. "Look mommy 24 dead fish!" As a result I will not buy fish there (because of the conditions the animals are left in).

We picked up about a dozen "painted" tetras. For those who don't know these fish were acid dipped then put in a "die" to give them extra colour. We got them from Chums as they were going out of buisiness and I am sure they would not be replaced. They have been through allot and will be living out the rest of their lives with us (or with someone who promises to give them a good home).

I will probably make a trip to Big Als tomorrow. To take pictures, document the situation and report it to animal control.

I find it absolutely inexcusable someone would put any animal through excessive pain to make a buck!!!

Dave
