  1. Depending on the dimensions of the tank I'm sure the 250 gal will be just fine for a silver arowana....unless it grows into a monster. Most captive silvers are fine in a 250 gal. What are the dimensions of your new 250 gal?
  2. I have kept ID's with silver arowanas before just fine. But I aggree with jvision you are going to need a much bigger tank to house all those fish. ID's can spaz out quite often and can go right through your tank and if not the poor thing will get damaged up pretty good, I have heard of them banging from side to side hard enough to kill themselves in a tank to small.
  3. Yes I found this to be true as well. I have had white gravel in some of my tanks before and found that it made a difference on the color of the fish. As well a black rocks can sometimes do the same thing. Once I began keeping and breeding many different kids of Africans I used only natural rock colors and found that it was the best to show the full natural color of the fish....with the best food for the of course (New life spectrum) AKA (NLS) is what I used for the most part.
  4. I never used ammonia detectors on any of my grow out fry tank when I was raising all the african cichlids. Believe it or not I never really worried too much about my fry tanks when it came to water besides the frequent water changes. I found fry to be much more hardy then you would expect. I have had tanks crash on me before and all the adults would die off and all the little fry hiding in the rocks would stay alive and healthy.
  5. do you currently have carbon in at this time. Sometimes chemicals in the water will cause mass die offs. If you put fresh carbon in the filter for about 12-24hrs you will pull out any bad chemicals (air fresheners/and anything that might have gotten into your water off your hands.
  6. Yes API E.M. Erythromycin will help out I have used this many time when tanks have been going for the worse. But be sure to take the carbon out of your tank when treating with any meds as the carbon will take all the meds out and then they wont serve any purpose. Also be sure to do the 25% water changes every day or 2 and then add more meds after and the problem should go away. I would turn up the temp about 5-7 degrees higher during the treatment. Also get that water tested as if you have fish dieing and they stay in the tank for any amount of time the ammonia will rise and that will make you ammonia rise more higher and the fish will just keep dieing. Good luck I hope the best. Oh and yes when you put new water in be sure to use water conditioner as the fish are stressed enough and if they have skin issues and you just put fresh water in the tank with no conditioner can you imagine how much the chlorine in our water would burn the poor fish!
  7. So how about those new skins......anyone heard anything yet???
  8. Totally agree they should be left in the ocean. The only reason they live in captivity for 6 months or so is that they can live without food for that long and they wont eat in captivity so sadly to say once they leave the ocean they have had there last meal
  9. Those are beautiful starfish but they are next to impossible to keep in captivity typically you would be lucky if you could keep them alive for 6 months the longest I have heard one kept is about 1 year. They come in a variety of colors not just pink but also I have seen green/purple/red and also a mix of all colors together in one starfish!
  10. Same here that's what I has looking at last night....How do we get the new colors that you speak of??
  11. K then it must be the newer freshwater ones that they are making. Just rinse it good either way and you will be fine.
  12. I have never ever seen a "eye bitter" actually go and bite out other fishes eyes I think its kind of a dumb name for them lol. The only thing to be notified about is that there is no doubt that it will end up the king in the tank though as mine always were. They wont bother anything unless someone tries to out rule him but most fish know they don't have much of a chance.
  13. Just be sure you did not buy the sand "already cycled for saltwater" if you are adding it to a freshwater tank e sure to rinse it very well if it is for saltwater sand. I'm not sure if carib sea makes this for freshwater tanks i know there is a company making it for freshwater aquariums but not sure what one is. I have only seen the black sand sold in saltwater mixes so far.
  14. Is it made form a different company cuz if so then that's the reason for the price difference. Is this sand you are using for a freshwater or saltwater tank?
  15. I would say that they are probably the same the one for $1 more might probably be made from a different company or they claim to have something else added like water conditioner or something.
  16. To tell you the truth I have heard nothing but bad experiences from people that bought sand with water in it. If you think about it anyone can add water to some sand or rocks and say its cycled for your tank. I had allot of people tell me that if they added it to there tank with the water in it the water was really dusty and you will end up with a clouded tank. And I have also heard that once you add the bag of water your ammonia rises to really high levels. (Think about what would be better for you fresh cooked potato's or the white flakes that come in a box that you just add water to and they are ready to eat! LOL) I would recommend you rinse before adding and cycle your tank the right way.
  17. It could be that she decided to pick up her baby's again and hold onto them for a bit loner it happens. Also sometimes after a female lets go of her baby's she can still have a mouth that looks like she still is holding or sometimes they grab a bit of air from the top and old a air bubble in there mouth before realizing that she is not holding eggs.
  18. Yes it would be ok to put your eye bitters with peacocks I have kept them with many other African cichlids.
  19. WOW great video!! Thanks for sharing the experience with us it was a very relaxing video
  20. Ocean City on 16th has them most of the time. But yea I would recommend that you obtain a bit of saltwater experience before keeping one as they are quite though for a beginner.
  21. Yes be sure too feed as many as possible to your puffers or you wont know what to do with them! I ran into a convict infestation about 9 years ago and thought I got rid of every one of them before I moved and after I settled into my new place and set up one of my tanks about 2 months later hiding in the rock work there I seen another baby convict peaking out! Boy I was not happy after I seen a second....and there it began again. Thankfully today I have none and plan to never let them in my home again! LOL I wonder if they are as bad as mice....
  22. LOL and next week you will be a great grandparent!
