  1. :welcome: Welcome to AA!
  2. You will likely have very well fed loaches. My husband had 3 YoYos in his tank with his platys and it wasn't until he removed the loaches that he began to have a population explosion of platys.
  3. Don't know if they've been bred in capitivity bu may have a guess as to how to sex. I found n article on how to sex bichirs and as ropefish as a very close relative of bichirs, I assume that sexing them the same way will work. The article is here. About half way down the page. Under care and maintenance. According to the article males have a wider and thicker anal fin. Hope this helps. The person I would recommend asking is Tortis. He's an oddball speciallist. Thanks for the help. I hope Toirtis sees this because, you are right, his input would be appreciated.
  4. I now have 5 wonderful ropefish and was just wondering if there is a definitive way to sex them. At least one of them seems to have an anal fin that is shaped differently from the others. I researched it on the 'net' but there was no clear answer. Any help would be appreciated. As well, does anyone know if they have been bred in aquariums yet? Thanks.
  5. Hi Devon, I have been using the Satellite systems from Current USA (like the ones you are looking at). At this point, I prefer them to the T5's I was using. I find that they seem to put out more light per gallon and all the research I have done says that they last quite a while. However, since all lights lose their intensity over time (even if we can't see it) the tubes should be changed about once a year in order to maintain the intensity. I have found that you can get them for an excellent price online. If you would like to know the name of the online source, just Pm me. :welcome: Welcome to AA!
  6. I got one from Henry and planted it today. I'll let you know how it does.

  8. Compared to some of you, my list seems quite tame. 5 ropefish 1 spotted raphael catfish 1 whiptail catfish
  9. :welcome: Welcome to AA! Beware - watching fish can become extremely addictive. :smokey:

  12. Just a quick note of caution. A lot of people get one or two loaches to deal with a snail problem. However, they do best in groups of 5 or more and often have very particular requirements. In a 20 gallon, you would not be able to keep anything more than the dwarf variety (Y. sidthimunki) they get to 2.5". For example, the polka dot loach gets to 5", the zebra loach gets to 4" and the YoYo loach gets to 6" Here is a very informative site to visit before getting any loach species http://www.loaches.com/ Good luck.
  13. I picked up some HUGE plants and some Endlers guppies and other livebearers. It was great!
  14. :welcome: Welcome to the forum, Mike!
  15. Only 2 sleeps left! Yaaaayyyyy!!
  16. Being a true fern, this is the way they reproduce. If you look on the backside of some of the large leaves, you will see black spots (this is where the babies come from). As werner says, just tie down the large leaves that were broken off. When the babies are ready, they will let go and go floating around the tank at which time you can catch them and tie them to whatever you want in the tank.
  17. Thank you everyone for your kind help. I have never had cichlids before and these ones are certainly characters. It was difficult to photograph them because they keep wanting to see what I am doing.
  18. I don't think they are, they do not have the verticle stripe going through the eye. Actually they do, but it is quite faint.
  19. They were part of an aquarium deal I got from Dalray.
  20. I have inherited these lovely fish but do not know which genus and species they are (I think they are Geophagus). Help please. Sorry for the fuzziness, I asked them to stay still but they were more interested in what I was doing. Thanks.
  21. Here is the link to the original article. More pictures are on the way.
