  1. Well I had a gourami with severe bloat, I even planned to dissect him and post the pics to potentially help understand what the heck causes them to bloat whether parasite or blockage. Anyway I increased the frequency of algae pellet feeding after reading that greens might help and voila a few days later the bloat is almost gone. Bloating started about a month ago and now its gone funny thing is I was looking forward to dissection but I'm way happier that the fish seems to have regained its health.
  2. No clue, I just ordered one of their diffusers to replace the fluval disc, looks like our parcels are having a race! The pricing seemed reasonable enough anything cheaper then ADA is worth a look at.
  3. I wonder how often people get native insects invading home aquaria. There is also a post somewhere on the forum where someone has moth larvae in the tank. Other potential local squatters may be dragonfly, mosquito, water boatmen, damselfly, water sprite, lacewing, water beetle and giant water beetle and giant water bug to name a few. that I can think of. Has anyone noticed anything else creeping in the tank? My filter often has gammarus shrimp in the sponges.
  4. Ha that's encouraging thanks for sharing the info in regards to what massively planting or reduced trimming has for an effect on the ecosystem.

The first pic is from the tank, the blue shadows and highlights really accent the plants well. The second picture is of the effect on the ceiling, a video would do it more justice to see the fish shadows swimming around.
  7. Welcome to the forum, I hope you come to the cas meeting I've been saving plants for it. I also found a really nice large piece of driftwood on the job a few weeks ago. I began bartering with my wife at 120 gallons and we settled on a 65 so if you want a 120 start at 200+ when bargaining haha.
  8. 65 Gal CO2 injected through reactor, solenoid set to a ph controler, quad t5ho lighting, fluorite substrate, wingin it fert regime. Started Nov 2013. Well planted and most likely overstocked 2 breeding pair of angels fs soon! Plants-bacopa, uruguay sword, amazon sword, hygrophila angustifolia, bacopa, stargrass, lemna minuta and minor, frogbit, glosso, cardamine lyrata, staurogyne repens, mircanthemem umbrosum, anubias nana, ammoricia aquatica, nymphaea green, ludwigia repens, cryptocoryne lutea and another spp., java moss, remnants of marsilea quadrifolia Fish- 5 Angels, 20 het rasboras, 10 cherry barb, 1 bristlenose pleco, 2 sterbai and 3 juli cory cats, 3 flying fox, remnants of failed glowlight(2) and cardinal tetra(3) schools, 4 ottos,
  9. Well isn't that pathetic, how can the picture be made bigger? I used the instructions from the post on hosting pictures and signed up with photobucket. And this is what it uploaded!
  10. Welcome to the forum, I'm new to the community as well. Definitely check out the auctions, I bet someone will bring extra bettas just from reading this post!
  11. I might reduce ferts a bit too because there will be less plant matter to uptake the nutrients. Tough call as I am still fine tuning my fert regime based on frequent test results and consistent water change schedules. I love watching the jungle grow back. The plants in the under canopy really get a boost from the trim due to the increased light received. Viewing the fish isn't a huge deal i'm too busy watching the plants, that and there's probably too many fish in the tank. Thanks for the tip on increasing the wc volume. I should really get on board with the photo sharing to post, I get a lot of compliments on my tank. I was going to post a pic of my baby girls tank with a single sword plantlet as an April fools joke but was tiered and went to bed instead. Indeed there is no such thing as too many plants!
  12. Is there such a thing as an over planted tank? My fish are loosing real estate by the minute but the plant load really makes the tank stand out. Its not what I would call an aquacsape but more of a jungle mish mash of random plants, over 15 species in a 65 gal. My wife thinks the plants are going to put the fish out of their home haha. I've been holding off on trimming so that I can do a huge batch of trimmings for trade or give away. So much for the trade idea there's no room for additions.
  13. Egeria densa and cardamine lyrata seem to do well as low light floaters even though they are stem plants. Hopefully this info helps you a year later haha at least its there for the next person wanting to know.
  14. Welcome to the forum. Keep an eye out for the cas auctions, seems to be a lot of cichlids there. If you want plants for your fish to destroy and uproot let me know I'm in NW calgary and often have trimmings to hand out.
  15. Ha! Flying foxes seem to really enjoy nibbling on my forearm hairs it tickles. It's pretty neat how the fish get used to our meddling and don't seem to be bothered much. You know your fish trust you when it gets to the point that a fish often has to be gently swatted out of the way to avoid trimming them along with the plants.
  16. Water pH also plays a critical role in plant health care, nutrient availability fluctuates with pH. Most essential nutrients are most available at a pH of around 6.5. Iron for example is less available for plants to uptake as pH increases and adding iron may not help reduce deficiency symptoms. Thus far I believe the easiest and lower maintenance way to maintain pH at optimum levels is to run a large CO₂ tank system with the solenoid plugged into a ph meter.
  17. Sounds like you have what you need to get started, definitely get the excel and possibly upgrade to an injection system later.Lots of info here on CO₂ and planted aquarium setup and maintenance. I am pretty new myself and think that a decent pressurised system is worth the investment. Keep reading and learning while trying new things that's the fun part of trial and error. As far as plants look for easy types to start with and try anything you can get for free. Some plants that did well for me were hygrophilla corymbosa, cryptocoryne lutea, lemna species lol, cabomba caroliana and anubias to name a few. When the plants start taking off and you get a hang of it propagate them to further your skills. Lately the plants in my tanks give me more enjoyment then the fish.

If you're looking for something cool to try out get one of those submersible led bubble wands. Place the wand at the back of the tank with the lights pointing up. The effect is that you see fish shadows on the ceiling it's really cool, kind of like a living night light. Important things to consider are not to have the air on and not to have a lid or use a glass top to improve the effect of fish shadows swimming across your ceiling... whoa there goes a fry!
  19. Welcome, nice tank. Keep reading and trying things out the learning process is the most fun and exciting yet challenging part. CO₂ is your friend however you decide to add it is your choice just don't waste your money on the fluval88.
  20. Olds college should incorporate aquascaping or aquaponics in their horticulture program. Aquatic plant keeping blends a lot of different courses knowledge and skills together. AA is definitely the right place to ask, if you're willing to make the drive I would gladly part with some trimmings.

6-8 would be my guess since the water volume has doubled, maybe try with 5-6 until the controller arrives then increase as required based on drop checker readings or other pH tests.
  22. I use the drop checker as a gauge for controlling CO₂ injection volume, dial up slowly by a simdgen a day til it turns green or get lazy and hook up the solenoid to a pH probe. Heck it's not being lazy, work smarter not harder.
  23. Bought another reg with a built in counter and thought I would try putting mineral oil in it out of curiosity.
