  1. Does anybody know the permits and customs requirements for importing Asian Arrowanas
  2. Yeah don't give up. The first time I spawned Sunsets I had actually given up. This was around 1992 and sunsets were very hard to obtain and the odd time a store had them they were in the 30 to 40 dollar range for 1 1/2'' fish. Anyhow while ordering some african cichlids from Ned Bowers in Boston he mentioned he had a pair of wild caught sunsets that were not doing well and if I wanted to pay the extra shipping he would throw them in so I jumped on it and had a pair . The male was around 9" and the female was around 6" and they looked in poor shape so for the next 6 month I treated these fish like royalty gave them the best of everything and got no response they looked depressed hardly ate didn't have nice color nothing. So anyhow I put them in a empty 50 gal that was under a 140 gal and kind of out of sight it had no light and only a medium sized sponge filter. For the next 3 months or so I gave these fish very little attention odd feeding last on the water change list etc. Then one day I noticed all these little orange balls on the bottom of the tank they were about the size of a BB and there was about 500 of them and they were just rolling around not attached to anything and the sunsets were ignoring them so I siphoned them out put them into a 5 gal pail and added a airstone .It took almost 2 weeks for these eggs to hatch way longer than I expected but they didn't turn white so I had left them. The offspring from these sunsets were top quality and were spawning at around the 2 1/2'' size and they spawned in the proper manner with eggs stuck to a flat rock and parental care. The wild caught pair never did spawn again and I think I sold them at a cas labour day auction. This probably won't help you dunl but I was bored ha ha
  3. What ever ends up on your list will probably be on sale at a lot of pet stores next week
  4. Yes dithers can help get them to breed---Gets them working as a team to defend territory
  5. Try adding some more fish some rainbow fish or bigger tetras-- that can help get their juice flowing
  6. If you are going to transfer all the old water and substrate + use the old filter in combination with the new one I would put the fish in right away .I've done it many times never had a problem.I would wait a couple weeks before removing the old filter and adding new fish and don't forget to moniter the water and do water changes if nitrite or ammonia get a little up.
  7. I'm glad things worked out for you--But a real WIZARD would have thrown a lid on or at least got a spawn out of them while they were on the floor
  8. I'm with Nick here. They might consider each other threats to their offspring and not spit them at all. If you know which one spawned first leave it in there and once it spits put the other one in . Or just strip them (that's what I always do)
  9. Nick is the DIY guy also known as sam chicklets-----don't worry he'll be around to help ya out
  10. Yes glass is the way to go. But if you go that route you could probably replace the whole bottom and have it fish ready if you change your mind in the future----I think Nick can tell you the procedure for replacing the entire bottom it's not that big of a expense and fairly simple. You already have to spring for silicone and glass it wouldn't be much more to get a piece that fits the entire bottom
  11. Here's a thought if you are planning on putting in dirt. You could cut nylon screen to fit the bottom, cover entire bottom with a thin layer of silicone and put in the screen or if the crack is not to big you could patch it that way
  12. Get a small U V sterilizer they cost 70 bucks at golds (in Calgary) and you will never have green water again
  13. Good article Dave I"ve been considering some madagascar's Once I have some space available
  14. It probably would be better to silicone a piece of glass to the bottom--the shellac would lift off the wood over time because off the moisture

    Hydra

If I remember correctly Clout eliminates hydra it doesn't say so on the label of the 1000 pack but I'd be willing to bet that is what I've used in the past of course one should check what it does to shrimp first as I have never kept them
  16. It might be wise to invest in a few tubes of caulking and seal up all holes and leaks. I would be more worried about the cold than the heat. If you can you should insulate the attic as that would keep the midday sun heat out and keep the heat in at night for a more stable environment. I've seen fish at a flea market in las Vegas with the temp at 42 degrees celcius outside and they looked happy to me. I think the water temp stays a lot cooler than the air temp that is around it. Probably why we need heaters for most of the tanks in the house
  17. I would also put in a space heater with a thermostat to help keep the temp up in case of a coldspell
  18. When I kill my bait minnows after catching them in my seine net (it's the law they must be killed immediately) I just add half cup of salt into their bucket. They don't last long it seems to go fairly smooth.
  19. I have well water but I don't use it in my fish tanks-I haul in 50 gallons every day
  20. Keep IT! If it croaks then send it to him he can dissect later(imo)
  21. I found the shrimp in the shallow areas my usual spots only had glassworms and cyclops no daphnia yet though.

  24. Yes I freeze up my own food
  25. I use a large aquarium net with fine mesh on a 8 foot pole you just swirl it around in figure eights without touching the bottom(so you don't get a bunch of pond gunk in it).two cups means 2 cups full without water
