SomethingIsFishy
Just finished a WC and cleaned my Rena XP2 canister filter. I greased the seal with some Fluval lubricant but am wondering what do you use? Can I use Vaseline petroleum jelly? Thanks...
geleen
silicon grease from a plumbing supply works well
RD.
O-rings should be lubricated with silicone based lubricants only, so no petroleum jelly.
nancyr
oh oh, I have been using petroleum jelly for decades. what disaster will happen?
RD.
Petroleum based products can break down certain rubber o rings, where silicone generally will not. In the end it depends on the type of rubber/material used in the o ring.
ckmullin
+1 for pure petroleum jelly on rings and impellers.
RD.
I love it when people argue about lubricants. lol http://alt.home.repair.narkive.com/izXb7U8R/vaseline-on-rubber-plumbing-seals As previously stated, it depends exactly what the 0-ring is made from. No matter what one uses, use lubricant on 0-rings VERY sparingly.
Iceturf
I had this issue a while ago - I had used Vaseline for a year or two while I didn't have silicone grease/lubricant. While its hard to tell, my O ring is old, I think it did 'go funny' a bit. It wasn't a resilient or springy as my other canister filter O ring. Since then I bought plumbers silicone grease. I'm assuming its fish safe, silicone grease/lubricant is funny when it comes to companies outright saying"foodsafe" etc. I got the impression that it is foodsafe adjacent, so as RD said don't use in excess. Anyways, nice sized tin for 5$, vs a tiny finger dab for 7$ from hardware stores. I haven't checked on my filters since then, but no leaks or issues. Does it really matter? meh?
