Melody
sorry, i'm not too sure about this particular situation, but...i use a vortex diatom filter on a monthly basis on my tanks, half hour or so on each tank after w/c. works great but there can definitely be some hassles involved, especially at first. the instruction manual can seem a bit cryptic at spots and recharging vortex can be a pain. it can get expensive too depending on your d.e source. grab a used model if you don't mind trading a couple of headaches for polished tank water. good luck with your situation. You can get the vortex at pool supply stores for much cheaper I'm told
Toirtis
You can get the vortex at pool supply stores for much cheaper I'm told Not the filter itself, but the diatomaceous earth....usually about $1/lb at pool supply shops. Medicdude
To bad you're not in Edmonton as I rent them at my store
grapeape
You could also add some filter feeding shrimp ( vampire, flower, singapore) as they feed on the algae spores in the water.
BluePenguin
Thanks guys, this is what I did this evening: 1) 80% water change 2) vaccumed the gravel (By now it barely made a difference) 3) added another dose of Clear Fast 4) Have the UV sterilizer going 5) Covered the tank in black garbage bags, not a speck of light inside Will leave it like that for 3 days... If this doesn't work I don't know what I will do.
jvision
If this doesn't work I don't know what I will do. If it doesn't work, that's not algae!! It's from another world!!

BluePenguin
Update: The tank's been covered for about 24 hours. The UV sterilizer is running, and the Clear Fast chemical added. What a difference. There is so much less of it now (as i peek underneath) but its still not clear - (green stuff is still suspended). I might let it sit until tomorrow, do another water change, clean the filter with the tank water, and give it another go.
jvision
If you decided to let it go 3 days, let it go 3 days - don't cheat and quit part way thru just b/c it looks OK. You want it to look great. Be patient.

BluePenguin
Hi guys! Sorry for not posting sooner! YAY!!! Its like a miracle, the aquarium was covered for 4 days, with the UV sterilizer running - and it all cleared up. I'm quite wary with the hours of lighting now - but so far it hasn't come back :) I can see my fish!!! Thanks for being there for me again guys
