I have never tried a canister, but I can say the AC's did a great job on my 90 gallon. Water always looked great, and no trouble with water parameters.

The polystigma is very cool. What is their temperament like?

If you want to put it on the inside why not use a rotary tool to make the hole a little bigger. This should remove the lip you are worried about.

Good for you Mathew. You must have quite the school of Clown Loaches now.

If you use HOB filtration you will need a cutout or two in the back to accommodate these. Also for heater chord and air lines. Looks like a doable design though.
