  1. Dumba**es releasing non-native species are going to mess up the whole deal for all the other responsible aquarists.......if you don't want one of you fish, find it a home, or as a last resort euthanize it....but releasing it into a non native habitat is way beyond a bad idea!! http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/snakehead-fish-nowhere-seen-sweep-burnaby-b-c-205306862.html
  2. I just did a google search for salamanders in Alberta, and there are only two that are native...neither appears to look anything like the one in your pic?? So, that makes one wonder if this one was introduced??....or if it may be a reptile, as the head REALLY doesn't look amphibian to me?? http://www.srd.alber...rs/Default.aspx Long Toed Salamander Size: This slender salamander can reach a total length of 140 millimetres (about 5.5 inches). http://www.srd.alber...Salamander.aspx ======================================================================================= Tiger Salamander Size: Ranges in length from 140 to 180 millimetres (roughly 5.5 - 7 inches) and occasionally up to about 200 millimetres (just under eight inches). http://www.srd.alber...Salamander.aspx
  3. Yup, just like Jason, my Fluval 403 was the first in Edmonton (ordered out of US prior to CDN release)....and before I even hooked it up to my aquarium, I built a spraybar, using PVC , and a hydraulic fitting cap as an end plug. IIRC, I used some sort of j tube toget me over the top rail of tank, and a Fluval 90 deg fitting connected between the j tube & the spraybar using clear vinyl tubing & some snap grip clamps. (clamps available @ Princess Auto, and I'm sure other places....) http://www.hcl-clamping.com/images/product_pics/l-herbie-clip.jpg HTH James
  4. Devon: You have a PM (or will in minute or two:)
  5. Jeff: Just out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of your tank? I believe a standard 90g is 48"x18"x24" deep. (well, that's what mine is:) But you mentioned in PM your 90g is 29" deep, so now I'm curious:) James
  6. Jeff: There is a PVC standpipe which feeds the wet/dry in the LH back corner, which has a piece of 4" PVC over it. The 4" is drilled full of holes so that it pulls water at all elevations (rather than only what runs down into the standpipe @ the surface). The 4" is covered in silicone that was dipped into the same gravel that I will use as a substrate, so that it's less obtrusive than a piece of white PVC would be:) On the other end of tank, the return from the pump comes up through bulkhead in bottom of tank, up almost to the surface, then 90's and turns into a spraybar which is as long as the tank is wide:) crappy description, I know.....easier if you see it.......
  7. The shop advertising on kijiji should be able to supply ou with a glass top, and cut you a center brace. They may even be able to help you out with trim.... http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-pets-accessories-300-gallon-tank-and-stand-brand-new-W0QQAdIdZ370451875 Bow Valley Aquariums know you are getting the best prices and superior quality. 8. My 90g will be using a 33g sump. Sump was purchased from same mfgr as tank. Keep in mind, that although the sump tank is 33g, it will not be full to the top, so you don't gain an actual 33g of volume....... See pics of tank/stand/sump here: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/diy/170549-new-kid-old-setup.html James
  9. Well, reef lighting is usually what? somewhere around 10k-14k?? Bulbs for FW plants usually no more than 6500K.....so that is only going to make things worse.......
  10. Another link off PT, sponsor......WOW! some of these shrimp are priced like Discus:) http://www.alphaprobreeders.com/aquatic-live-shrimp-sale/ http://www.alphaprobreeders.com/blue-jelly-shrimp/ $59.00/6shrimp
  11. Val: You could try LV, but I'm not certain they will have what you seek? You could also try Bartle & Gibson ......but in the end if you got 10 yrs out of the original, and a replacement is $15.00, that's $1.50/yr....I expect to get the same thing in brass will be MORE ( and will likely be made up from two or more separate items(. oh, almost forgot, Make sure you take your old one with you, it will be easier than trying to describe what you want:) James
  12. Look @ 2nd from RH side of page, first row http://www.shrimpfever.com/shop/livestock-shrimp/
  13. Just doing a quick lap of kijiji, and found an ad for shrimp, which made mention of a website shrimpfever.....and found these:) Not quite as cool as the blue jellies, but nice http://www.shrimpfev...e-tiger-shrimp/ Blue Tiger Shrimp
  14. Digging around on plantedtank, and in one thread, came across this link to pics of Blue Jelly Shrimp:) http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_6b4fea280100s9re.html link was found in this thread.... http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/southern-oak-aquatics/165869-weve-got-shrimp.html
  15. Saw this thread on Plantedtank, just wondered if anyone on here has tried any of these products. In my travels (of the first page) of the thread, it seems like those who are using are quite happy?? http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/shrimp-other-invertebrates/165609-borneo-wild-products-reviews.html http://www.borneowild.com/prod.php?g=2 James
  16. I vote for black, it starts out black, and remains black, does not change coulour if it becomes necessary to medicate the tank, should algae start creeping under the edges, it is much less visible than it would be with clear....the list goes on.......
  17. The cheap/quick & dirty fix is go buy a big rubbermaid tub, siphon in as much tank water as it will hold, and hook up your filter/heater, transfer fish into tub. Or go buy another tank (new or used) and do as above.... Once fish are safely housed elsewhere, you can then deal with repairing the original tank.... http://albertaaquatica.com/index.php?showtopic=11713 ....and remember, you DO NOT WANT silicone intended for bathroom, etc, as it contains an anti-fungicidal agent which will leach & will kill your fish. Dow-Corning 732 is fine, and available @ Acklands-Grainger and a bunch of other places.... Good Luck! James
  18. If anyone knows the one fellow that bought not one but TWO of those 110gal tanks, please let me know. He was sitting right behind me, and we chatted a bunch, discovered we are practically neighbours, but in typical duma** fashion, I never did get his name:) James
  19. There is a whole sub category in the link below dedicated to Hillstream Loaches. Loaches.com has been around almost as long as the internet, and is THE place for info on loaches:) http://www.loaches.com/articles http://www.loaches.com/articles/hillstream-loaches-the-specialists-at-life-in-the-fast-lane
  20. I don't know how recent the aforementioned rules came into effect, but when I bought my PP, I called, they said they had it in stock, and asked me what I wanted it for. I explained it was for disinfecting plants, they said OK. That was probably something like 2000-2001? And for the record, it was the Zellers pharmacy in Millwoods Town Center. And yah, a little bit goes a LONG way:) James
  21. I had never seen this company before, but had a look @ all their listings, they certainly have a good variety & prices....so why the lack of enthusiam when making mention?? (I have always made great efforts to support my LFS's, so it takes a lot to make me stray) Thanks! James
  22. Dow-Corning 732 is Aq Safe, available @ Acklands-Grainger, and I'm sure many other places HTH James
  23. Trust me, Kubotai's get bigger than 2.5", the only one that is going to stay that small is Sidthimunki. For all you ever wanted to know about loches and more, go to http://www.loaches.com/ and there is a forum as well http://forums.loaches.com/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=dd377c89c96f450b25c8905d318f559c Oh, and three should be considered a minimum....five is better:) HTH James
