  1. MMMMMM Parents !!!!!!! LOL John Of course I know theyre freshwater, my dad actually tried to argue with me saying that they are indeed saltwater and my mom told him that arguing about fish with me is a dumb idea. LOL
  2. If you search the epcor site under FAQ you will see that they use Chloramine Your fish are at great risk without treatment! I use prime works great. J
  3. Great idea just the city alone would be great. I do not like my e-mail address known though. J "So along with my "Good idea!" I will also say, "Hats off to you mods and admin who keep this forum going!"
  4. Maybe or perhaps even likely, the food is complete in all way's. Having shown and bred dogs for over 20 years, I have my doubts about ALL prepared foods. Even though I used them and continue to use them. If I do not supplement fresh greens, the plants WILL get eaten :boxed: Feeding the vegetables 3 times a week certainly safes my plants. J
  5. I know my rainbows, clown loaches and BN love zuchini (put a slice in the microwave for 25 sec, thanweight it down) Also crushed blanched peas and shredded cooked spinach. I always prepare lots, freeze, then thaw before feeding. J
  6. Looking very nice indeed! I like the discus at the bottom the best  What is that variety called? J
  7. Well I still can not find the spell checker :boxed: I am using Firefox. I downloaded a checker but I do not see it in this window. Perhaps I can be further enlightened? J
  8. same here. the xp3 comes with a spray bar J
  9. I would squeeze-out, the filter material from your small tank into the big tanks filter, it will add millions of bacteria immediately. The filter(s) will cycle in time. Adding another NON-cycled filter will not help. While the gravel holds bacteria, too much rotting material (if there is any)would add to the ammonia load, so try for a balance here. One other idea is to not feed for a few day's. As long as there is ammonia present the filter is building up bacteria. J We do have a measurable amount of nitrates as well. The filter is cycling but not finished. We were told not to touch the gravel by every pet store person in Lethbridge so we didn't. We have a small tank that is cycled but I think that the levels are too high for the amount of filter material that I have available from that small tank. We were also thinking about adding a bigger filter. Tomorrow when my husband is home we'll vacuum the gravel to see if that helps.
  10. :welcome: I have 2 questions 1./ How old are the test kits, and 2./ Is there a measurable amount of Nitrates? Some more thoughts. Good to have thoughts, but no expert here. I would vacuuum the gravel really well, there may be too much food rotting in there, adding to the ammonia load. While there are some good bacteria in the gravel, the bulk of the work is done in the filter media. What kind of biological media are you using and are you perhaps cleaning the filter material under tap water? If so, better to leave it alone till it is cycled. The filter should eventually cycle, the high nitrite can last some weeks. Can you get some media from a cycled tank to squeeze into yours? Prime will give false readings of ammonia, and will render it non toxic. It is of course required if the water contains chlorine I had good succes using stability daily. I have no experience with the ammonia aborb material, is it perhaps interfering with the natural cycle? John
  11. I am NOT an expert but that is only 333 lbs per square foot hardly a problem on a basement type floor slab of say 6" with a properly compacted gravel base. (20000lbs / 60 sq.feet) Me thinks....If I stand on one foot I would have more force than that.......NO guessing at my weight lol
  12. Just in case one might want to buy....these look good and gert good reviews http://item.express.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....em=160202132611
  13. Never gave that a thought! :boxed: So what happened to the fish when the incident occurred? J
  14. I suck them out with the hose only , of the gravel cleaner, in the morning just after lights on. From time to time I suck out twenty or so in 2 minutes. Keeps them under good control. J
  15. Looks to me like a professional job! When is the "open house" party? John
  16. My guess is that it is a Lake Tebera or yellow rainbow. Likely female. They have orange fins. However a crossbred is also possible. Google the above for pics. A good resource is www.rainbowfish.info lots of experts to help j.
  17. I do pretty much the same as Qattarra describes, works very well! Also use prime, never seem to have a problem. Even the discus don't mind. John "Nah , no refill kit. Just use gravity."
  18. Please enlighten this Co2 ,not even started, newby! unsure.gif http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl36...reactor500wpump 1/Is this all you need? 2/I guess one needs to buy co2 cartridges as well? And how many per year? 3/They talk about 180 bubbles per minute is this enough for a 1.8 w/gal, 90 gallon tank? 4/ What will happen to my PH Thank you for your reply ...I am totally in the dark about this, but would like better plant growth without adding more wattage. John

:welcome: to the "in" "sane" club cheers and welcome. John
  21. I don't mind the snails, they help with cleaning up and with algea. When I think there are too many I hand pick 30 or so and it is ok again for a few months. :shifty: You can crush some in the tank and the guppies will love them as a snack. I have 3 clown loaches in my 90 for over a year and there are still plenty of snails, they eat a few but I guess I feed them (the loaches )to well. J.
  22. You might try here.... http://bowheads.org/forums/ http://www.rainbowfish.info/index.php J
  23. Just did the same thing to a 20 gal worked just fine. I wiped the corner frequently with a dry towel, for a few minutes, applied silicone and 24 hrs later all was ok
