Agree with Jason. Ideally I believe that having a flow through system of changing 100 percent, 1-3 times a day would be ideal for most kept species.

silicon grease from a plumbing supply works well

Your county should have a recommended lab they use.

While I don't have shrimp, I do not see an issue if it is fitted well so they cannot get behind the filter.

I use this type of filtration in most of my tanks. Very happy to report that maintenance is very minimal. Some are in use for 2 years now without cleaning required. When the water level is different on the "pump" side by say more than 2 inches I drop it on the sidewalk a dozen times and reinsert it.

Thanks for the great pics. Those are some very big fish. Is it catch and release only or do you enjoy them for lunch?

Another possibility in addition to above did you have seasoned filtration

How Big Is Too Big - Filter For 55 Gallon Tank With Goldfish
geleen replied to signet_planet's topic in Equipment
That would be a good choice for a filter. They don't like a lot of current. My wife's goldfish tank 60 gal with 5, - 3 inch orandas needs a 75% water change per week to keep the nitrates down below 40.... they do make a mess but love them just the same. J -
I have never added salt to my rainbow tanks including the boesmani. They like hard water....wich we have. John

Since you dont have fish you could try a snail killer.

Exactly,...... 1/4 teaspoon = 1 gm at least on my NOT so accurate gram scale. I am sure, that I am "overdosing " the smaller tanks as I do not measure but guess. J

I have been using approximately 1 gram per 100 gallons for a year with no issues. Measured it once or twice to get an idea what it looked liked then estimate for tank size. Likely have used up to two times as much, at times. Fish are fine.
