Really brings your attention more to the inside of the tank, instead of the stuff hanging in the back. I really like black backgrounds. Looks great, nice job.

Unfortunatly some store employee, regardless of what they sell, will tell you a product is better just to stop you from leaving the store empty handed. Feed the stuff to your friend and send him back for some NLS.

Yes, guppies will tolerate lower temps.

Some people would say neglect is a bad thing. You seem to be proving the opposite. Looks nice.

A quick search on google says the parrots can get to 8 to 10 inches so not a good idea for such a small tank.

While waiting for the NLS to arrive you can feed them the flakes. They will also eat the wafers. They could be taking the sticks in and spitting them repeatedly because the sticks could still be too hard. Try grinding them up smaller.

I also use sand with HOB filters and have never had a problem. Just make sure you rinse it well before adding it to your tank. After that just let it settle a bit and all should be good.
