  1. Mine is in a 2 1/2 gal tank with plants. Gets a 50% water change twice a week. My father-in-law's betta is in a standard 4 liter fish bowl with a mess of java moss and gets a 100% water change twice a week (because he overfeeds).
  2. I have almost used my 2 liter container of Prime up in the last year or so (100+ gallons of water changes twice a week) and was thinking about ClorAm-X. Does anybody have any experience good or bad with ClorAm-X?
  3. My experience with angels when they pair off is that they will harass other angels constantly and usually the ones being bullyed can't get away due to limited space in an aquarium. So the only way to minimize this is a larger tank ie 50 gal and up with 8 plus angels so the bullying is spread around and no individual is picked on constantly.
  4. algae farmer builds an intake system out of pvc pipes and tees and puts sponges that he has cored a hole part way through on the tees. Works well with power heads..
  5. If you cut a slot in the middle of one of your filter pads and stick it over the intake you should never have any problem with the impeller clogging up and you also have additional biological filtering area which is readily cleaned.
  6. Aquariums and small children do not mix well - especially in a day home. All my running tanks are in one room within 12 feet of a drain and a water supply. Wall bases have been sealed to prevent leakage (and to keep spills out of the gun room) and all walls have been vapour barriered. Water changes (currently down to 18 tanks) only take 1 hour twice a week using 440 liters. If they are not in one spot you can't even enjoy your tanks as much either. Humidity is not a problem with covered tanks either. A single room just makes things easier (same as a workshop with all your tools in it).
  7. Try taping something on the front, back and sides (ie a dark non transparent table cloth from the $1 store). Then cut an elongated hole on the front (or side if you can see through one of the sides). That should stop them from spooking until the fry are big enough to add the dither fish. I use construction paper (usually laminated) but plastic works as well and if it's too transparent then double it.
  8. There was an excellent article in the last Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine on raising brine shrimp - It's worth reading even for those of us who have bred brine shrimp many times over the years..
  9. Go plastic. Galvanizing uses zinc and it is not good for fish.
  10. With the number of tanks you have you will probably need a blower. They are worth a few hundred dollars but they produce a great deal of air volume and pressure and should be able to easily run a large number of air stones and air driven filters whether they be hobs, inside or undergravel. I don't think you will find any diaphram pumps (or piston pumps) that will handle the volume you need without going to a series of them.
  11. Lee Valley has the double cup suction handles - ($32.50 If I recall right) and rated at over 100 pounds per unit.
  12. Hornswort doesn't grow roots. Just let it drift.
  13. Check the floor to see if it is level where the stand is. If not then shim your stand legs. If the floor is level then check your stand to see if it is level. If not then you need to shim it or level it in someway. Also is the tank not level based on the top plastic frame surrounding the tank or are you checking level on the tank using the bottom of the plastic frame (the top frame can often get lifted up on one side when being moved).
  14. One fellow I met (at a garage sale) used a stock tank heater to keep his outdoor pond from freezing. Anybody else know if this would be a good/bad idea?
  15. Use an acrylic cover between the tank and the light to eliminate corrosion. Also silicone will work around the wires etc.
  16. I believe the adult bristle noses are not the best algae eaters - the younger ones do a better job. Algae farmer can verify this.
  17. Welcome and thanks for helping me clean up the hall on Saturday morning before the show started.
  18. In answer to your question, Toirtis - yes there were some killies auctioned off but I don't recall any eggs being offered.
  19. Would sticking it it your freezer kill the bugs (tropical bugs don't like the cold)? Also if they are living in the air wouldn't they die once the wood is submerged in the tank (and your fish could have a bug treat)?
  20. The light diffusers from the double florescent light fixtures are 11 1/4 " wide and will sag somewhat in the middle after a while. If the tank is too wide cut them the other way so you can fit them in across.
  21. I redid the vapour barriers on the outside walls along with lots of tuck tape (it was originally done in the 70's) and added vapour barriers to the inside walls. I also did the ceiling in reflectex and sealed the ceiling. The temperature in the fish room went up and is around 80 on the top shelves. I also have a dehumidifier in the fish room. By the way the reflectex was a stupid (yes stupid) and very expensive idea. I would have been as well off to use a plastic vapour barrier. If you use covers on your tanks you won't get as much evaporation (and your fish won't jump out either - well not very often anyways).
  22. These ypes of gloves also work great for field dressing animals during hunting season.
  23. I believe the salts that the water softener uses, to eliminate the hardness, are not good for the fish. Can anybody else explain why (Toirtis?)?
  24. I don't think you will find any power bars that aren't labeled "not for aquarium use". I'm guessing that it's probably to do with the fact they aren't waterproof. All the ones in Walmart were marked "not for aquarium use". I' don't think it's a problem as all the older model power bars didn't have that restriction.
