rodsboys
I have a 10 gallon that leaks at the top some where.Rather than reseal it I would like to cut a couple inches off the top of it and make it a 5 or 6 gallon.Anyone got pointers?Do I have to take the tank apart then cut it or can I cut it while it is intact? African_Fever
If the tank isn't cracked, it would be much easier to reseal it. Cutting it would require the entire tank be taken apart to ensure straight cuts.
Reza
I agree with African_Fever, re-silicone the tank, cutting the glass introduces far too many problems.
FishManTy
Gonna agree with the re-silicone. Any chance that it is condensation building up and leaking over the plastic rim? When I got my 150gallon, it did that, so I had to run a bead of silicone on the inside to stop condensation from building up and dripping down the front
Majestic_Aquariums
Yeah, I don't think it would be possible to cut it while still in tact. You most-likely would be setting yourself up for failure, and a nasty cut as well. You have to score the glass, and then snap it in the opposite direction as the score. So individual pieces on a flat surface is the only way I know how to cut that stuff. A 10 gal. wouldn't be that hard to re-seal. Good luck! FishManTy
When I come to think of it... the easiest thing to do, would be to toss the 10gallon, and buy a new one... they only cost $10-
Garhan
Bring it over and I will reseal it for you. Garhan

Reza
Resealing a tank isn't that bad, it just sucks trying to get the silicone off of my fingers without using smelly chemicals.
rodsboys
Thanks for all the replies and offers, but I wasn't asking "should I cut the tank down or reseal it?" I was asking how should I cut the glass.? I appreciate those that replied concerning that.I will be taking the tank apart and cutting it thanks to your much appreciated advice. Reza
Sorry I misconstruded, just curious, do you need to fit the ten gallon into a smaller area? ~Reza~
rudy
You can buy a glass cutting attachement for a dremel. They work really well and if you have a steady hand you could probably do it intact.
Pufferpack
Another way to go is find someone with a diamond saw (for ceramic tile or rock), most lapidary shops will cut rock for you so I imagine they would do glass as well. I have a nice little saw in the garage, if you are ever in Calgary give me a shout.
