  1. The fish in question were started on Hikari First Bites and then switched to NLS Growth formula. I know because they came from me. I only feed NLS with the odd veggie wafer. Leon
  2. For larger fish, you can just use eggcrate. Or you can put screen over it so the smaller fish can't get through. HTH, Leon
  3. Check this link. http://www.epcor.ca/pages/water/WaterQuali...ly/wqdaily.html HTH, Leon
  4. That's very cool. Congrats. Leon
  5. Welcome..........Where are you located? Leon

    new stand

GREENBOARD. .............see, there is always a silver lining. Leon
  7. Oops, forgot about the sponge. Yes, you will need sponge or floss. I have the FX5, so its not part of the tray capacity.
  8. 1.) empty - definitely put something in there. 2.) octagon shaped pieces - those are called pre-filter - move to top tray. 3.) round cylinder thingys - probably bio-max - fill second tray as well with this or other biomedia. 4.) carbon - I only use this on a first time setup. Cleans the water to crystal clear and removes any possible contaminents from the new substrate, rock, etc. After that, you can fill it with biomedia. One word of advice. Never wash out your media with tap water. If you do, then all bacteria that has grown on it is dead. Use only existing tank water or treated water (dechlorinated). And if you have to replace some media, only change out one tray at a time. HTH, Leon

    new stand

    Well done.
  10. Gina, that is one of your Cobues. As far as the purple, I was trying to go for the purpleheart wood look. But then the stain got too dark. And now you can't see the grain. Oh well, I know for next time. Leon
  11. I agree with John on this one. Is there a male that won't leave her alone? I have seen this with sub males as well. Just trying to hide from the dominant one.
  12. Finaddict, there is actually a trim piece that covers the bottom of the tank frame to make it look the same as the stand. Work in progress Gr8.....I thought about making more. Maybe someday.
  13. Well, its finally up and running. The fish are happpy, even the Acei are schooling. This is something I hadn't seen before. I think I will add more rock and move the heaters out of sight. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j222/Leo...al/HPIM0929.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j222/Leo...al/HPIM0932.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j222/Leo...al/HPIM0933.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j222/Leo...al/HPIM0934.jpg Thanks for looking, Leon
  14. Run it backwards, as in flow out of it up through the gravel. It will keep the crap out of the substrate. HTH Leon
  15. I have them in my 55gal and am currently building another for the 150gal. Simple to do, and works great. Use the 1/2" PVC (white) that you can get at Home Depot. I also use the MaxiJet 1200 with the Watts PL-3036 fitting. I found that the slip fit of the tubing is tight enough that you don't need to use adhesive. HTH Leon
  16. I moved the 55 up to my daughters room last weekend. Re-arranged the rockwork and put the same fish back in the tank. And they know me. And they would almost feed out of my hand before. But now, they are skiddish as all hell. I guess what I am trying to say is just give it some time. Leon
  17. That's cool. Glad to hear that you will separate them. Leon
  18. Val, When do you need them spotted? I am a member now, so I can do this if you want. Let me know. Leon
  19. Thanks for all the nice comments. It has been a long time coming. But I am very happy on how it turned out. I plan to fill the tank on Sunday. Then I can get pics of the canopy as well.
  20. I use the freezer to euthanize a sick or severely injured fish. It is supposedly a more humane way, rather than to flush or other methods. I have read about using clove oil and vodka as well.
  21. The stand is basically done. Just finishing up the wiring. Two teleposts in the basement are done. UGJ's still to make. Hopefully be adding water this weekend. Front Back
  22. You can get all kinds of veneers from HD or Windsor. Buy the unfinished sheets as it is a lot cheaper and then finish it with the stain and clearcoat that suits your taste. And you can get some corner moldings that can receive the same finsh to match. Leon
  23. Rufus, my niece's oscar, will take care of any extras.
  24. I get home form work last night, and one of my females spits 80 fry. I transferred them to the grow out tank, so I counted each and every one. I never thought there would be that many. Puts my total up to 119 babies in a little over three weeks. Anybody want some? Leon
