  1. +1 quarantine, the new fish may have brought something with them they would have a partial immunity but your existing fish would have none,so it would take a greater tole on them.
  2. Seachem root tabs 40 pcs. packs can be purchased from J&L aquatics or Anglefins much cheaper than the 10pcs. packs from LFS.My swords love them.
  3. Its all about appearance not substance just like every thing else government related. They probably got time & half for slipping that form in the box on their way to their 2nd job.
  4. If your handy with a hammer & nails you could build your own shipping crate out of 2" x 2" & some 1/8" plywood leave room on the bottom and corners for some Styrofoam & packing peanuts or bubble wrap around the sides.Could also double as a coffin for who ever manages to break it.
  5. Yep from spring thaw to freeze up water ends up in the flower beds, vegee garden or lawn, winter on the house plants.Snails and plant trimmings land in the compost pile, old filter media ends up on the bottom of flower pots for drainage.Vegee garden loves the stuff lots of spinach & cucumbers for me & the fish.
  6. Google clove oil for a humane method sorry
  7. I have a trio 1M 2F in a 20g planted with some BN plecos, I was hesitate in the beginning heard about how difficult they were to keep. But once I had the tank planted and stable they seemed to settle in very quickly and began to breed regularly about every second week, but so far they have eaten everything they laid. But one of these days I will grab the eggs and try to raise separately. What they lack in size they make up for with their big personality's.Not sure how many would be happy in your 29g I would guess double should work if they have lots of hiding spots. Forgot to mention I also have another female that I used as a dither fish in a tank of some high strung Goyder River rainbows that were having a problem settling into their new tank.
  8. GBR's are a blast lots of personality, friendly to most fish not sure about shrimp.Give them some plants & a few flat rocks you might even get them to breed.Mine are always swimming up to say hello and begging for food.
  9. J&L Aquatics has a good selection and good $
  10. So my faithful Aquaticlife fixture is having problems came home to see it cycling off & on I checked all connections inside & out I'm suspecting its the ballast does anybody know where I can pick up a new ballast in the Calgary area?
  11. 12) 2x4's x $2.50 = $30.00 1) 4x8 3/4" plywood = $50.00 1) box 2.5" screws = $ 20.00 1) bottle wood glue = $5.00 1) box of beer = $24.00 (optional)
  12. Hornwort has been a mystery to me too. When I first tried some it grew like crazy easily filling my 75g and I ended up throwing half of it away every week at WC time. Then it stop growing and haven't been able to grow it since. Now I only use it during quarantine in my 10g,only needs to last a month then gets tossed. It can be sensitive to Excel & does not like H2O2 .
  13. The Aru 2s are another work in progress I also received some nice stock, but my biggest challenge was spotting the fry before the adults, fry are tiny they look like specs of dust with tails.I did manage to scoop up six and get them into a small tuperware container that I floated in a different tank.I was feeding them some Sera Micron ( thanks Rainbow Ric )for about a week then started adding mico worms which they loved, but after another week they stopped eating & passed.New fry have been non existent or harder than normal to spot.
  14. Ah yes GBRs had same thing happen, paired off laid eggs 24hrs. later in was scrambled eggs for all,2nd go round they waited 48hrs.3rd time eggs made it to wigglers then became lunch. So I decided to try and pull eggs and raise myself but now they insist on laying all of their spawn on a large piece of drift wood that can't be removed. But I haven't given up yet one of these days they will use one of the multiple flat rocks or sword leafs in the tank.
  15. Seachem Excel does wonders on black beard algae just follow directions on the bottle I have never found it necessary to over dose like some recommend.
  16. Oh ya it will come back if you don't solve the problem eg.photo period, fert.dosing & co2. Excel will kill it but doesn't solve the issue that caused it.
  17. Always wondered if a pond of Archer fish would be possible, brackish water should take care of most pathogens Archer fish the bugs hmm just a thought.
  18. Every piece of driftwood I have tossed in a tank has grown some kind of funky mold/slim on it, usually sorts its self out quickly BN plecos & snails love it too.
  19. Happy everything worked out for the better, curious which test kit are you using? On the API for high range PH test it should be five drops.
  20. A stable PH is much more important than getting exactly what is "recommended" for the fish, playing with the PH will cause problems with swings in one direction or another.
  21. Oh yes cleaning Flourite Red or any other type in the bath tub generates more than a negative comment been there done that.LOL
  22. New Life Spectrum can be picked up from most LFS Big Al's & Pisces both have on boxing day sales.
  23. Don't want to calculate because then I may have to admit I have a problem.Besides I haven't run out of room YET!
  24. Best to move them all together or you will have aggression, the easiest way for me was to set up their new home and place extra shells in the old setup. Then on moving day when everybody dives for a shell to hide put your thumb over the opening of shell and move over to the new tank.May take a while to round up stragglers put I managed to round up 99% of them this way.
